Rocks Sweep Doubleheader to End Six-Game Skid

Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
ZEBULON, NC -- The Wilmington Blue Rocks swept a doubleheader from the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday, winning the opener at Five County Stadium, 9-1, before taking the nightcap by a score of 5-2. The victories ended Wilmington's six-game overall losing streak and its 10-game road skid. Doubles keyed the Blue Crew attack, as the Rocks pounded nine two-baggers over the course of the twin bill.
The Blue Rocks earned a wire-to-wire win in the opener, scoring twice in the first, three times in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh. Wilmington clubbed a season-high seven doubles in the victory, including two by outfielder Anderson Miller. Miller also drove in two runs. Robert Pehl added three hits and three RBI.
Miller got the Rocks on the board before an out had been recorded. His double to right-center scored Cody Jones. Miller came home three batters later on a two-out RBI single by Luis Villegas. The Rocks then poured it on by sending eight batters to the plate in both the sixth and seventh frames.
The story was Corey Ray, who came up one pitch shy of tossing a one hitter. Ray retired the first six batters he faced and did not allow a hit through three frames. Carolina got an infield single to start the fourth, but that runner was immediately erased by a double-play grounder. That was all the Mudcats managed until there were two outs in the final frame of the seven--inning game. At that point Ray allowed a solo homer to Jordan Edgerton, which ended his night after 6.2 brilliant innings.
In the nightcap it was a pair of doubles that keyed the sixth-inning rally which put the Rocks ahead to stay. Mike Hill launched a one-out double, and scored two batters later on Austin Bailey's two-out single, breaking up a 1-1 tie. The Rocks added three more insurance tallies in the frame courtesy of a two-run, two-bagger by Pehl and an RBI single off the bat of Brian Bien.
Todd Eaton tossed two scoreless frames out of the bullpen to earn the win for Wilmington.
The Rocks continue their final road trip of the 2016 campaign on Wednesday with another game against the Mudcats. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Southpaw Matt Tenuta (7-9, 5.29) takes the ball for the Blue Crew and will be opposed by Carolina right-hander Matt Withrow (8-6, 3.85).
