Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys (67-67/31-33) set new offensive standards all across the board, as the team defeated the Potomac Nationals (70-62/36-28) 17-10 on Tuesday night at Nymeo Field. With the win, the Keys remain in playoff contention. Over the nine innings, the team set new season-highs for runs, runs in an inning (eight), hits (22) and hits in an inning (eight). Additionally, the orange and black tied a season-high for extra-base hits (seven), while Steve Wilkerson equaled a Keys-high for RBIs in a game this year (five).

After tying the game at nine in the seventh, the Keys put together an eighth inning to remember. All eight runs scored with two outs and came after an error by Nationals third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez. With two away, the bad throw by the third baseman put runners at the corners for Yermin Mercedes, who singled home Wynston Sawyer to put the Keys ahead. That was the first of six consecutive RBIs as Jomar Reyes (single), Wilkerson (two-run double), Josh Hart (double), Erick Salcedo (single) and DJ Stewart (double) drove in runs as well.

Aderlin Rodriguez capped off the inning with an RBI base knock. Overall, nine consecutive Keys reached before a Conor Bierfeldt fielder's choice brought the inning to a close. Neil Holland allowed all eight hits before Justin Thomas came on to get the last out. Although he was tagged with the loss, each of the eight runs charged to Holland (1-3) were unearned because of the Gutierrez error.

Frederick scored 11 of the game's final 12 runs following a five-run P-Nats seventh, where a number of close pitches did not go the way of Tanner Chleborad. Following a single by Victor Robles, Austin Davidson added a base knock to prompt a pitch change. Replacing Garrett Cleavinger, Chleborad (5-3) induced a ground out to put men at the corners, but walked Raudy Read to load the bases. From there, the righty threw a wild pitch to plate a run prompting an intentional walk to Drew Vettleson. With the bags repacked, Osvaldo Abreu unloaded with a grand slam to left.

The lead did not last for long. In the seventh, the Keys tied the game back up. Rodriguez started things with a solo homer off Whit Mayberry. After a strikeout, Gilberto Mendez came on in relief and allowed the next four to get on base. A walk and a base hit loaded the bases for Wilkerson, who singled in Mercedes, before Josh Hart hit an opposite field triple to make it 9-9.

Overall, the Keys posted four multi-run innings. Trailing 4-0 after two stanzas, the Keys scored three times in the second and twice more in the third. With two in scoring position, Steve Wilkerson plated two with a base knock, while Salcedo added a single. One inning later, Bierfeldt slugged a two-run homer off Austen Williams.

In the contest, all nine starters recorded a hit and RBI, eight tallied multiple hits and five drove in two or more. Wilkerson led the way, going 4-for-5, with a double and five RBIs (ties a career-high). Hart also went 4-for-5 and came up a homer short of the cycle.

Chleborad got the win, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three runs.

The Keys and Nationals play the middle game of their series on Wednesday night. Right-hander Franderlin Romero (6-4, 6.16) starts for Frederick against P-Nats righty J.D. Martin (0-2, 6.00) First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App. For tickets, fans can call the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
