Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers used a huge night at the plate from Matt Edgecombe to defeat the Tucson Toros 6-5 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. In the process the Vipers swept the Toros and have now won four straight games for a 5-2 Golden Baseball League record. Edgecombe led the way with a pair of clutch two-out singles and a go ahead home run in the 11th inning. The first baseman tallied four runs batted in overall while going four-for-six and now leads the Vipers in RBI with 11 on the season. After falling behind 4-1 in the third inning Calgary rallied to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth when Tucson scored to force extra innings. The Snakes used 18 of their 22 active roster players in the contest.

Up until the ninth inning the bullpen led the way for Calgary starting with Berek Fasking who threw two and a third innings scoreless, followed by Daniel Chaffardet who was making his Snakes' debut and retired all six batters he faced including striking out the side in his first inning while also scoring the game winning run in the seventh, and finally Brian Oliver tossed a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts. Rene Miniel (1-0) recorded the victory by throwing the final two extra innings scoreless with only allowing one hit.

At the plate Jonny Kaplan also had a productive night going two-for-three with two walks to reach base in four of his five plate appearances.

Tucson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Josh Womack reached on a ground ball to third base, Jose Valdez reached on a bloop single, Lino Garcia walked to load the bases, and Womack scored when Victor Ferrante grounded into a double play for a 1-0 lead.

One swing of the bat was all it took for the Vipers to tie the game at 1-1 in the next half inning as Caonabo Cosme nailed his second home run of the season.

The Toros took the lead back in the bottom of the third as Womack tripled and Valdez launched a two-run shot. Another tally was added for a 4-1 advantage when Ferrante, Cristobal Santana, and Luis Apodaca all singled to force one in.

Calgary tied the game again in the top of the fifth frame as Jonny Kaplan walked, Fasking sacrificed him to second base, Guillermo Reyes singled in Kaplan, Jorge Mejia doubled, and Edgecombe drove in two for a 4-4 score with a base hit.

The Snakes took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning as Chaffardet singled in his first at-bat of the season, Reyes sacrificed him to second base, and Edgecombe clutched up again with a run batted in single for a 5-4 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth Valdez tripled and scored on a Garcia RBI single for a 5-5 tie and extra innings.

Leading off the top of the 11th Edgecombe blasted his first long ball of the year for a 6-5 Calgary lead.
