
Outlaws Acquire Prieto From Scorps

(Chico, CA. May 26th, 2010) The Chico Outlaws, members of the independent Golden Baseball League, announced today they have acquired shortstop Alex Prieto from the Yuma Scorpions in exchange for future considerations.
Prieto, 34, is in his 18th professional baseball season overall and spent parts of two seasons in 2003 and 2004 with the Minnesota Twins. Signed by the Kansas City Royals as a non-drafted free agent in 1992 at the age of sixteen out of Caracas, Venezuala, Alex started his pro career in 1993 with the Gulf Coast League Royals. Named a Carolina League All-Star in 1996 with Wilmington (High-A), he hit .284 with 40 RBIs over 119 games. Prieto's best offensive season came in 1999 with Wichita (Double-A Texas League, compiling a career best .294 batting average in 114 games.
In 2002, Prieto was signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent, going on to make his major league debut at age 27 with Minnesota during July of 2003. That year's squad featured a team that won the American League Central Division crown, finishing with a 90-72 record and eventually losing to the New York Yankees three games to one in the American League Divisional Series.
Beginning the 2010 Golden Baseball League in Yuma, Prieto appeared in eight games for the Scorpions, hitting .250 with four RBIs.
The addition of Prieto to the Outlaws lineup brings the number of players on the roster with big league experience to six, joining Wayne Franklin, Mark McLemore, Matt Perisho, Bobby Hill and Mike Rose.
Prieto will join the Outlaws today as they return from home from a season opening five game road trip in Tijuana, where Chico swept the Cimarrones to begin the season.
The Outlaws open the home portion of their 2010 season on Friday May 28th, which is Fireworks Night presented by Enloe Medical Center and the 25th Anniversary Salute to Flight Care. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:35 pm at Nettleton Stadium, with the fireworks show to begin immediately after the game.
