Victoria Seals Stun The Warriors In Game Five

May 26, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Returning to Royal Athletic Park for the Tuesday night rubber match against No Koa Ikaika Maui, the Victoria Seals were looking for their third win of the year in the fifth game of this five-game set. Handing the ball to Kyle Wilson (0-0) for the start, Victoria contended with Wes Ethridge (0-0) on the hill for the visitors.

Maui was first to score in the top half of the second inning when a two-out walk to Ryan Stevenson converted with the help of a single from Chris Nash and an RBI double off the bat of Rex Rundgren. After both teams failed to produce a run in the middle innings of play, Na Koa Ikaika stretched their lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Mark Okano and Phil Avlas followed by a walk to Stevenson to load the bases led to a two-run base hit from Nash to put Maui up by three.

With runners at first and second in the top of the seventh inning, Victoria's left fielder Sean Smith made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Avlas of a home run and a 6-0 Maui lead. One inning later, in the bottom of the eighth, the Seals embarked on their second comeback of the series.

A lead-off single from Eric Pringle brought Shane Cronin to the dish as a pinch-hitter in the pitcher's spot. Launching his second home run in as many days, Cronin pulled Victoria within one with one swing of the bat. After a Wilver Perez double put the tying run in scoring position, Colin Moro knotted the game 3-3 with a base hit of his own.

Then, with Moro standing on third base a balk was charged against Maui reliever Jason MacKintosh, handing the Seals a 4-3 advantage through eight innings of play. With closer Brandon Villafuerte on to close out the game, Perez turned a nifty double play at second base for a 4-3 Seals win in the game five rubber match.

Victoria's Andrew Arreola was awarded his first win of the season in relief, while Jason MacKintosh took the loss for Maui. Another two-run home run from Shane Cronin led the way for Victoria, while catcher Josh Arhart also nabbed a pair of runners attempting to steal second in the win.

With an off-day scheduled for tomorrow, the Seals return to action with game one of a four-game set against the Orange County Flyers on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Royal Athletic Park. The contest will also be broadcast live online at www.victoriaseals.ca, and in the ballpark on 88.1 FM. Both single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office. Call (250) 220-7777 for more information, or to book your seat today!
