Edenton Steamers News Release
WILSON, N.C "" It took 12 innings to decide game one but Edenton (31-10, 11-4) outlasted the Wilson Tobs (23-21, 8-10) 2-1 before allowing four unearned runs in game two in a 5-1 loss to earn the twin bill split on Thursday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.
Game one shaped up to be a pitcher's duel out of the gate as both starters, Connor Cuff (University of Pennsylvania) for the Steamers and John Valek III for the Tobs both set down the first nine men they faced in order.
Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) broke the tie with a solo home run over the left field fence at Fleming Staduim. The four-bagger was Thompson's seventh home run of the year and it gave Edenton a 1-0 lead.
Cuff relinquished his first safety of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Logan Regnier reached on an infield single. A groundout moved him to second; he stole third and came home on Ridge Gonsoulian's 35th RBI of the season, a single that tied the game at 1-1.
Originally scheduled as a seven inning contest, this game was destined for extra innings as the pitcher's duel resumed. This time however the key players were Dillon Frye of the Tobs and Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) of the Steamers.
Frye entered the game in the top of the sixth inning after Valek III threw five and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on six hits, adding two strikeouts. Frye proceeded to retire the next 16 Steamers he faced before being lifted in the top of the 12th with the score still 1-1. Frye pitched five and one-third innings in relief and did not allow a base runner.
McCoy for the Steamers entered the game in the bottom of the ninth after Cuff pitched eight innings of one run ball, allowing only three hits and striking out six. Neither Cuff nor Valek III earned a decision for their stellar efforts.
McCoy retired the first nine men he faced before Edenton, in the top of the 12th scratched out a run. Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) reached on an infield single and Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) sacrificed him to second base where Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) obliged by knocking him in with a single to put Edenton up 2-1.
McCoy allowed a single in the bottom of the 12th to Wilson but that was it, picking up his sixth win of the season to no losses. JT Brubaker, who entered for Wilson in the top of the 12th and relinquished the run to Kirsch took the loss, he is now 3-4.
Game two began with a scoreless first inning after Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) retired the Tobs in order in the first. Miller made his seventh start of the season against Nick Monroe who was making his second start of the season.
Despite picking up three hits through the first two innings Edenton could not plate a run and the 0-0 tie remained until the bottom of the second.
Seth Neeley was walked to lead off the inning and Jimmy Luppens singled followed by a Korey Dunbar infield single to load the bases. Nick Regnier hit a RBI fielder's choice for a 1-0 Wilson lead. After Zach Lee was hit by a pitch Sean Godfrey skied one out to Laz Villa (Reedley College) in center field. Villa made the flub of the ball game and everyone, including Godfrey came home to score for a 5-0 Tobs lead.
Edenton scored their only run in the top of the third when they got three straight hits including a Josh Hampton RBI single to score Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) to cut the lead to 5-1. Hampton extended his hitting streak to ten games and he is the CPL leader with 37 RBIs.
5-1 was the final as each starter went the distance for their respective clubs. Monroe earned the win improving to 2-1 for his seven inning, nine hit performance. He walked one and struck out eight Clams. Miller pitched six innings and allowed five hits and five runs (only one earned), he walked a batter, hit a batter and struck out three, taking his first loss of the season. Miller is now 4-1 this summer.
Edenton travels back home and welcomes in Morehead City tomorrow for a double header at Hicks Field. First pitch at 6 p.m. and the gates will open at 5 p.m.
