SwampDogs Win 25th Game

July 25, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

The SwampDogs' offense continued to dominate as the team picked up its 25th victory of the season on Thursday night. Fayetteville (8-4, 25-14) scored three runs in the second and fifth innings to give them an 8-6 win over the Gastonia Grizzlies (6-9, 16-27).

Gastonia started things off in the second inning when Jimmie Davis (UNC-Pembroke) was caught in a bases loaded situation. Josh Hyman (Wofford) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Grizzlies the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Dogs capitalized with a bases loaded situation of their own. DJ Hoagboon (Albany) had an RBI walk and Chad Whitehead (UNC-Pembroke) hit a two-RBI single up the chute to make it a two run game.

Grizzlies' first-time starter Daniel Hyatt (Morehead St.) suffered the loss after allowing four runs and four hits in four innings of work.

In the fifth inning, Brian Celsi (California) placed a perfect safety squeeze bunt down the first base line and he beat it out for a single and drove in the tying run. A few batters later, Michael Timm (Wright St.) laid a bunt down the first base line to score two more because the pitcher couldn't make the play at first.

The SwampDogs were in control 7-1 after five innings, but the Grizzlies made it interesting in the next frame. Daniel Fraga (UNC-Pembroke) led the inning off with a single to left field and Kane Barrow (Memphis) hit his first triple of the year to make it a 7-2 ball game. After a pair of walks, Davis was caught on the hill in a bases loaded, no-out situation.

Hyman roped a bases-clearing triple to right field and he would eventually score to make it just a one-run lead for Fayetteville. But that was all the offense the Grizzlies could muster.

Fayetteville held on to win 8-6 and Travis Hissong (Wright St.) picked up his fifth win of the season on one strikeout and a double play ball.

Davis threw six innings in route to his team-leading fourth win of the season. He had six strikeouts, but he allowed six runs (four earned) to score. Cody Dix (Francis Marion) and Jack Van Horn (Wright St.) combined for two innings of one-hit ball and three strikeouts.

The SwampDogs seven through nine hitters each had two RBIs and the team is now 16-2 when it scores at least five runs.

Throughout the game, Fayetteville auctioned off the game worn, one-of-a-kind pink SwampDogs jerseys to help raise money for cancer. The seventh annual StriKing Out Cancer Night was a success at "The Swamp" and it raised money for the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation Friends of the Cancer Center.

During the seventh inning stretch, there was a survivor walk on the field for the fans and their family to be honored for beating cancer! We thank everyone for his or her help on this excellent cause.

The SwampDogs will play game two of their five game home stand Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Wilmington Sharks.
