The Royals are the ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League while the K-Wings are the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and the San Jose Sharks of the NHL and Adirondack and Worcester of the AHL.

Reading has advanced to the Kelly Cup Playoffs four times in its eight seasons and reached the conference finals in 2004.

Although they joined the ECHL in June, the K-Wings have been playing hockey in Kalamazoo since 1974 as a member of the International Hockey League from 1974-2000, the United Hockey League from 2000-06 and the new IHL from 2006-09.

The season gets into full swing with seven games on Friday including South Carolina raising its record third Kelly Cup championship banner before hosting Wheeling and Alaska hoisting its second National Conference banner prior to its game against Victoria.

Friday's action also includes the return of hockey to Toledo where the Walleye are expecting a standing-room-only crowd when they host the Florida Everblades for the grand opening of the 7,500-seat Lucas County Arena.

Other games on Friday include the Cincinnati Cyclones traveling to Elmira to battle the Jackals in a rematch of the North Division Finals and the Ontario Reign traveling to Bakersfield to face off against Pacific Division rival Condors.

The final two matchups on Friday have the Idaho Steelheads hosting the Stockton Thunder and the Las Vegas Wranglers, who have advanced to the National Conference Finals each of the last two years, hosting the Utah Grizzlies.
