PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 29th through July 5th:
Harrisburg Senators third baseman/first baseman Matt Skole has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 29th-July 5th. The 25-year old hit .462 (12-for-26) with five doubles, one home run, eight RBIs, two runs scored, four walks and a .769 slugging percentage in seven games last week. Skole, who is a native of Woodstock, Georgia, had at least one hit in six of the games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, including going 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs in 6-5 win over the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels on Wednesday night. Skole drove in the winning run with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 13th inning. The 6'4", 225 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in doubles (5) last week and tied for the lead in RBI (8) and extra-base this (6). He also ranked among the weekly leaders in total bases (20-2nd), slugging percentage (.769-3rd), OPS (1.285-3rd), batting average (.462-4th), on-base percentage (.516-5th), hits (12-tied 5th), home runs (1-tied 10th) and walks (4-tied 10th). Matt, who is tied for second in the league with 50 RBIs in 74 games this season, was selected by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round of the 2011 draft after hitting .348 with 10 homers as a junior at Georgia Tech.
Gabriel Ynoa, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Binghamton Mets, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 29th-July 5th. The 6'2", 160 lb. hurler started one game for the B-Mets last week and posted a record of 1-0 with six strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Ynoa, who is a native of La Vega, Dominican Republic, made his lone start of the week on Thursday night at Erie and struck out six batters while firing a complete game one-hit shutout in Binghamton's 5-0 victory over the SeaWolves. The lone hit allowed by Ynoa was a double by Erie's Harold Castro in the bottom of the third inning. The only other baserunner in the game for the SeaWolves came on a fielding error in the seventh inning. It was just fourth time in B-Mets history that a single pitcher has thrown a complete game one-hitter. The 22-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in WHIP (.011) and batting average against (.034) last week and tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00). He also tied for third in the league in wins (1). Gabriel, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the 11th best prospect in the Mets organization, was signed by the New York Mets as a Minor League free agent on November 19, 2009.
