Last Match

Earthquakes 3, Crew 2; Saturday, May 4, 2002; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.
The defending MLS Cup Champion San Jose Earthquakes overcame a 2-0 first half deficit and beat the Columbus Crew 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium behind Ramiro Corrales' first goal of the season in the 90th minute. The Quakes fell behind by two goals in the first half before Wade Barrett scored with a minute left in the half to cut the deficit to one goal. An early second half goal from Danish midfielder Ronnie Ekelund continued the comeback, and Corrales finished the job with his last minute goal. The Crew moved ahead in the 23rd minute with a goal from Dante Washington. Brian Maisonneuve started the play with a through ball to Kyle Martino on the left wing. Martino sprinted into the Earthquakes box and fed Washington, who maneuvered around Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon and slotted the ball into the corner for a 1-0 advantage. Columbus stretched its lead to two with a penalty kick goal from Jeff Cunningham in the 43rd minute. Cunningham created the play by feeding Maisonneuve inside the penalty box. Quakes defender Zak Ibsen lost his footing and fell onto the legs of Maisonneuve, which resulted in the penalty. Cunningham slotted the ensuing penalty kick into the right corner. One minute later, the Quakes got back into the match behind Barrett's first goal of the season. Barrett sent a cross in to the Crew's box that was cleared right back out to him. He took a touch and fired a low right-footed shot into the far post to make the score 2-1 heading into halftime. The Earthquakes evened the score two minutes into the second half behind a goal from Ekelund, his second of the season. Barrett started the play on the left wing swinging a cross to the back post. De Rosario shook free of his mark and headed the ball down. Ekelund stepped in front of his defender and drove a left-footed volley into the far post to tie the score. Corrales netted the game-winner in the 90th minute, completing the Quakes comeback from a 2-0 deficit. The play started with rookie Luchi Gonzalez, who had subbed in just seconds earlier, in the right corner. Gonzalez sent a low cross to the top of the box to Corrales, who blasted a shot that deflected off a defender to Manny Lagos. Lagos tipped the ball back to Corrales, who hit a second shot that went over Presthus' head and found the upper portion of the net to give the Quakes the 3-2 win.

Last Match vs. MetroStars

Earthquakes 1, MetroStars 1; Saturday, April 27, 2002; Giants Stadium; East Rutherford, NJ
The defending Major League Soccer Champion San Jose Earthquakes earned a 1-1 tie with the MetroStars at Giants Stadium to remain in first place in the Western Conference. Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon made a diving save in the 5th minute of the game to keep the game scoreless. MetroStars forward Rodrigo Faria received a pass behind the Quakes defense and raced in one-on-one with Cannon. Faria drove a low shot to the far post that Cannon saved diving to his right. Four minutes later, the Earthquakes had a chance of their own to take an early lead. Ian Russell picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and moved towards the MetroStars goal. Ariel Graziani made an angled run through the MetroStars defense as Russell fed him the ball. Graziani let the ball run through and it slipped past MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard. Before Graziani could recover the ball, the MetroStars defense cleared it away. The rest of the half the two teams battled to take the lead with no success, and the teams headed to the dressing room tied 0-0. Despite the pressure from the Quakes, the MetroStars scored the first goal of the match in the 55th minute, a goal that ended the Earthquakes 490-minute shutout streak against the MetroStars. Faria played a ball to Diego Serna in the box, and he chipped a pass over the defense to Clint Mathis, who knocked a side volley into the corner of Cannon's goal for a 1-0 lead. San Jose continued to pressure the MetroStars goal in the 70th minute. The Earthquakes attacking play bore fruit in the 72nd minute with a goal from Graziani. Ronnie Ekelund got free inside the penalty area and beat a MetroStars defender, before poking a low shot with his left foot towards the far post. Howard made the initial save with his right hand, but the ball fell to Graziani on the back post, where he touched the ball into the net to even the score at one.
