Last Game

Earthquakes 3, Houston Dynamo 2; March 28, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif.

Cam Weaver scored just before halftime to give the San Jose Earthquakes a lead they never relinquished as they defeated the Houston Dynamo 3-2 on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Weaver's goal capped a wild 14-minute span in the first half when all five goals were scored. Ryan Johnson and Arturo Alvarez scored three minutes apart to give the Quakes a two-goal lead, but the Dynamo responded quickly, with goals from Chris Wondolowski and Brad Davis in a three-minute span to pull level, setting the stage for Weaver's 44th-minute heroics. Seven of Houston's starting XI had been San Jose Earthquakes before the original MLS club moved to Texas, and the rivalry between the two teams made for a lively match. After being shutout in their opening game, and struggling to find the target in the game's first half-hour, San Jose broke through in the 30th minute when Weaver pushed a pass through a crowd to Johnson racing into the box from the right side. Pat Onstad came out to cut down the angle, but Johnson slipped a left-footed shot past the Houston goalkeeper that caromed off the left post and into the net. The Earthquakes doubled their lead just three minutes later, when Alvarez cut in from the right side, dribbling to the top of the box before unleashing a left-footed shot that beat Onstad cleanly inside the right post. Down 2-0, Houston was quick to answer. In the 34th minute, Stuart Holden burst down the right side, and hit a line drive cross that caught Wondolowski in full stride at the top of the six-yard box. Wondolowski slammed home a header to put Houston on the scoreboard. A minute later, a deflection teed up Brad Davis from 25 yards out, and Davis tied the game with a blast that sailed inside the left-hand post. Houston then looked to go ahead, forcing San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon to get down to stop a Davis shot in the 41st minute, and dive to knock away a long range Ricardo Clark effort in the 42nd. But it was San Jose who regained the lead just before halftime. In the 44th minute, a Chris Leitch blast from long range was deflected by Darren Huckerby right to Weaver near the penalty spot, and Weaver was quickest to react to the loose ball, pushing it past Onstad for a 3-2 San Jose lead. The second half picked up where the first half left off, with end-to-end action. In the 58th minute, Ramiro Corrales missed wide right from the top of the arc for San Jose. In the 59th minute, Brian Mullan broke in from the left side for Houston, letting fly from the top of the box and missing wide left. In the 61st minute, it was Mullan again, dribbling in on goal and forcing Joe Cannon to come off his line to stop him from six yards out. The Earthquakes brought on Quincy Amarikwa for Ryan Johnson midway through the second half, and the rookie forward almost got on the score sheet in the 77th minute, forcing Onstad to kick save his shot from 10 yards out. Houston's best chance for a late equalizer came in the 85th minute. Davis hooked in a corner kick to Clark making a near post run, but his header went wide right. San Jose, which won its first game of the season, travels to Kansas City to face the Wizards next Sunday. Houston, with one point from their first two games, will also be on the road next weekend, going to the nation's capital to play D.C. United.

Last Match vs. Kansas City

Kansas City Wizards 3, Earthquakes 2; Oct. 18, 2008; Community America Ballpark; Kansas City, KS.

The San Jose Earthquakes fell 3-2 to the Kansas City Wizards at Community America Ballpark. Scott Sealy and Shea Salinas scored for the Earthquakes. However, Herculez Gomez scored in stoppage time to give the Wizards the victory. With the loss the Earthquakes are eliminated from playoff contention. At the start of the game, San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon was tested quickly and came up big in the fourth minute. Lopez pounced on a misplay by the Earthquakes defense and charged toward the goal, but Cannon came off his line to stop a rampaging Lopez. He got the goal he was denied earlier by Cannon, in the 18th minute. Thompson connected with Lopez on a give-and-go, fighting a cross into the 6-yard box. Lopez volleyed the pass, extending his right leg to loop the ball past Cannon into the corner of the net. The Earthquakes bounced back quicker than an aftershock as Sealy and midfielder Arturo Alvarez combined for a goal. Alvarez crossed the ball from the right touchline, finding Sealy in front of goal, and his header was his second goal on the season with his new team. Sealy was playing his against his former team, acquired by the Earthquakes on July 11. The Wizards put together a textbook goal seven minutes later. Defender Jack Jewsbury played the ball in and Lopez flicked the ball with his left heel. Arnaud was led perfectly and he pushed the ball past Cannon into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season. The Wizards had controlled the opening 45 minutes, with 10 shots in all and six on target, bringing four saves out of Cannon. Then in the 60th minute, the Wizards had their best chance off a counterattack when substitute Ivan Trujillo danced in the penalty box before unloading a shot that forced Cannon to dive left to make the save. But at the halfway point of the second half, the Earthquakes started to come back into the game, and soon pulled even. The Wizards failed to clear the ball in the 71st, and it cost them. K.C. goalkeeper Kevin Hartman was unable to collect a cross and went to the ground. Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad failed to clear the ball, and the Quakes took advantage. Salinas hammered a shot dead center on goal, the ball flew high inside the top netting and the Earthquakes had pulled level. Feeling like they needed to win in their final home game, the Wizards pressed for the winner. Lopez headed a ball just over the goal on a pass from Gomez in the 81st minute. A Gomez direct free kick in the 85th minute flew right into the sure hands of Cannon, and then in the 90th minute, Lopez ran onto a ball on the left wing and fired to the left of Cannon, but he stuck out his left glove to knock the ball away. Then Lopez took a last-gasp corner with the three minutes of stoppage time nearly gone. His dipping cross was met by a running Gomez who bulged the net with a left-footed touch past Cannon to give the Wizards the victory.

Salinas Visits Mount Pleasant High School

Earthquakes midfielder, Shea Salinas and District 5 San Jose City Councilmember Nora Campos, visited Mount Pleasant High School last Wednesday, as part of the Amway Global Kicks for Kids Program. Salinas focused on why the students need to be active and eat well. The 22-year old connected with the students by telling stories of the eating choices he made in high school and how he learned quickly that eating a healthy diet improves one's overall quality of life. Salinas discussed the importance of eating a healthy, hearty breakfast to give you the energy you need for each day's activities. The Texas native then switched to the importance of being active. He encouraged the kids to get outside and play sports or just go for walks. To emphasize the point Salinas pulled three members from the audience to challenge him in a soccer skills demonstration. Several tricks later, after much laughter and applause, a young man from the high school's soccer team stood victoriously on stage. To reward him for his efforts Salinas handed over an official Earthquakes soccer ball. To wrap up the afternoon, Earthquakes staff handed out 150 jersey replica shirts and 150 tickets donated by Amway Global to the students to attend the Earthquakes last match against the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Earthquakes and Amway Global teamed up to create the Amway Global Kicks for Kids program in 2009. Through the program, Earthquakes players will visit 15 schools or community centers in the Bay Area to discuss the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. The next school visit will take place on Wednesday, April 8 at Clyde Arbuckle Elementary School in San Jose.
