Donovan and Mulrooney are Back With Quakes
Earthquakes forward Landon Donovan and midfielder Richard Mulrooney rejoined the Earthquakes in Costa Rica for the Champions Cup. Both players saw action for the United States National Team in a 1-1 tie against Haiti on Saturday, March 13 at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Donovan started the match and played 74 minutes before being replaced by Mulrooney, who helped the U.S. earn a tie when Danny Califf scored in the 94th minute. Donovan and Mulrooney flew from Miami to Costa Rica and met the rest of the team in the airport.
Injury Report
Defenders Eddie Robinson and Ryan Cochrane did not make the trip to Costa Rica due to knee injuries. Robinson continues to do rehab exercises as he recovers from a sprained LCL in his right knee. Cochrane injured his left knee in the Quakes exhibition match against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday, March 12. Defender Todd Dunivant traveled with the Quakes but continues to experience pain in his left quadriceps muscle and will not play vs. Alajuelense. Ian Russell strained his left calf during Tuesday's training session and is questionable for Wednesday's match. Defender Jeff Agoos suffered a sprained left ankle during Tuesday's practice and is listed as probable.
Ronér To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery
Defender Chris Ronér will undergo season-ending surgery on his right ankle and has been placed on the season-ending injury list with the hope that the 24-year old San Francisco native will return for 2005. By placing Ronér on the injury list, he will not count against the team's 18-man roster in 2004. Ronér will have an allograft surgery to repair a cartilage lesion in his right ankle. The injury was discovered during arthroscopic surgery on both his ankles to remove bone spurs, which Ronér had on Nov. 25, 2003, just two days after MLS Cup. During the procedure, the team's orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Arthur Ting discovered the lesion in Ronér's right ankle. After seeing a specialist in San Diego, Ronér will undergo a procedure known as an allograft performed by Dr. Michael Brage. This surgery will force Ronér to miss the 2004 season and he is aiming for a return for the 2005 season.
Galaxy Down Quakes In Pre-Season Match In Santa Barbara
The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 2-1 decision to the Los Angeles Galaxy in a preseason exhibition match at UC-Santa Barbara's Harder Stadium on March 12. Dwayne De Rosario put the Quakes in front 1-0 in the first half, but the Galaxy scored twice in the second half to earn the victory. The Earthquakes took the lead in the 21st minute when Craig Waibel lofted a perfect ball over the Los Angeles defense from deep in San Jose territory. De Rosario beat the Galaxy defenders to the ball and then took a brilliant touch to head into the middle of the Galaxy penalty box all alone. Los Angeles defender Ryan Suarez brought De Rosario down from behind and was whistled for the foul, setting up the penalty kick. De Rosario buried the ensuing kick, putting the ball to the left of Popik for a 1-0 lead. The Galaxy evened the match in the 50th minute on a goal by Arturo Torres. Joseph Ngwenya started the play when he won a loose ball in the Quakes penalty box and headed it over to Torres on the right side of the box. Torres let the ball bounce one time before sending a rocket towards the net that beat Pat Onstad and deflected off the crossbar and into the net. The Galaxy got the winning goal in the 84th minute when Carlos Ruiz was able to get free behind the Quakes defense. Andreas Herzog lofted a ball over the Quakes backline, allowing Ruiz to run onto it and dribble into the San Jose penalty area. Onstad charged off his line in an attempt to block the ball, but slipped and fell to the ground as Ruiz poked the ball over him and into the net.
