Earthquakes Weekly Update: September 2, 2019

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 3-0 victory over Orlando City SC on Saturday night at Avaya Stadium, extending the club's home unbeaten streak to 12 matches (10-0-2). Saturday's win marked the Quakes' seventh shutout of the season, five of which were earned at Avaya Stadium.

Earthquakes midfielder Magnus Eriksson scored the first goal of the night, recording his sixth goal of season and 12th of his career in MLS. Eriksson's goal marked his first career game-winning goal in MLS. Midfielder Jackson Yueill was credited with the assist on Eriksson's goal, setting a new MLS single-season career high in assists at four. Yueill is now at eight assists in his MLS career.

Forward Chris Wondolowski recorded a brace in a span of 13 minutes, marking his 23rd career multi-goal game and earning sole possession of second place among all players in MLS history. Wondolowski continues to lead the team at 13 goals this season. His all-time MLS scoring record is extended to 157 goals.

Midfielder Vako was credited with the assist on Wondolowski's first goal, putting him at four assists this season.

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza was credited with the assist on Wondolowski's second goal and became the first Earthquakes player with 12+ assists in a single season since Marvin Chavez registered 13 in the 2012 MLS season.

The Earthquakes now turn their attention to a three-match road swing, beginning with a trip to Utah to face Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Playoff Push

With a record of 13-10-5, a two-point gap lies between the Quakes and second place. The Earthquakes are now 13-6-5 since the start of April with a +17 goal-differential and currently sit in fourth place.

Avaya Fortress

The Quakes extended their unbeaten streak at home to 12 matches (10-0-2). It marks their longest such streak since 2013 (16; 11-0-5).

Collecting Clean Sheets

The Earthquakes recorded their seventh shutout of the season, five of which were recorded at Avaya Stadium.

The First Time

The Earthquakes earned their first-ever victory over Orlando City SC, who entered MLS as an expansion team in 2015. San Jose is now 1-1-3 all-time against Orlando in regular season play, including a 1-0-2 record at home.

PLAYER SPECIFIC

Team Player

Midfielder Magnus Eriksson tallied his sixth goal of the season, tying his MLS career high from 2018. It marked the 12th goal of his MLS career. Eriksson ranks third among his teammates in goals with six and second in assists with eight.

American Icon

Forward Chris Wondolowski tallied his team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season, extending his all-time MLS scoring record to 157. Wondolowski's brace marked his 23rd career multi-goal game, moving him into sole possession of second place among all players in MLS history. His 13 goals this season lead MLS among all American-born players.

Key Figure

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza was credited was the assist on Wondolowski's second goal. Espinoza is now at 12 assists since joining MLS in January. He is just the sixth Quakes player with 12+ assists in a single season and the first since Marvin Chavez in 2012 (13).

New Career High

Midfielder Jackson Yueill was credited was the assist on Eriksson's goal. It marked Yueill's fourth assist of the season, setting a new MLS single-season career high, and eighth of his MLS career.

Versatile Player

Midfielder Vako was credited with the assist on Wondolowski's first goal. Vako is now at four assists this season and 11 for his MLS career.

VS. NEXT OPPONENT

Visiting the Beehive State

The Earthquakes are unbeaten in three consecutive matches against Real Salt Lake after defeating the Utah side 1-0 in July. San Jose now hold a record winning record of 11-10-11 in all-time regular season matches against the Utah side. The Quakes are 3-5-7 when playing at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Reno 1868 FC fell 3-1 to Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday night at Greater Nevada Field. Forward Corey Hertzog tallied Reno's lone goal in the 82nd minute. Midfielder Lindo Mfeka and defender Duke Lacroix were credited with assists on Hertzog's goal. Hertzog is now at 13 goals this season, occupying sixth place among all USL Championship players for most goals in 2019.

Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, defender Kevin Partida and midfielder Eric Calvillo were featured in the Starting XI for 1868. Quakes midfielder Siad Haji entered the match as a substitute in the 71st minute.

Reno remain in third place in the Western Conference and aim to return to winning ways when they host Fresno FC on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Greater Nevada Field.

1868 will celebrate Noche Latina on Saturday. Noche Latina will kick off with the Súper Clásico de Leyendas match between America Leyendas and Leyendas de Guadalajara (4 p.m. PT). Reno's USL fixture versus against Fresno FC is set for 6:45 p.m. PT and will be streamed on ESPN+. Tickets for Saturday's doubleheader can be purchased here.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The San Jose Earthquakes Boys' Academy opened the 2019-20 season with a pair of wins over Placer United SC on Saturday, August 31. The Boys collectively outscored Placer United 22-1. The U-13s won 10-1, and the U-14s added a 12-0 win.

The U-13s and the U-14s will host Marin FC Alliance on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Evergreen Community College. The full season schedule for the Boys' Academy can be accessed here.

The Girls' Academy opens their regular season on Saturday, September 14 when they host La Roca FC at Evergreen Community College.
