San Jose Earthquakes News Release
The San Jose Earthquakes rebounded from a 3-1 midweek defeat on the road at Minnesota United FC with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night at Avaya Stadium. San Jose's unbeaten streak at home is extended to eight matches dating back to April 6 (7-0-1).
After briefly tumbling out of a top-seven playoff position, San Jose surged back into sixth place with Saturday's victory. The Earthquakes will now face the LA Galaxy in the second meeting of the year between the two clubs on Friday, July 12 at Dignity Health Sports Park. Friday's match is set for 8 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on UniMas, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.
EARTHQUAKES NOTES
Pure Grit
San Jose is now 7-2-4 in their last 13 matches after suffering a 3-1 loss on the road against Minnesota United FC on Wednesday and defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0 at home on Saturday night. Saturday night's win extended San Jose's unbeaten streak at home to eight matches (7-0-1), giving the club its first eight-match home unbeaten streak in a single season since 2016.
San Hoesen
Forward Danny Hoesen scored the only goal in Saturday night's 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake. Hoesen is one of three players in the Western Conference with 4+ goals and 2+ game-winning goals in fewer than 10 starts this season (LAFC - Adama Diomande; POR - Brian Fernandez). Hoesen has tallied 21 goals and six-game winning goals since joining Major League Soccer at the start of 2017.
Stepping Up
Second-year defender Paul Marie was credited with the assist on Hoesen's goal. It marked his first career assist and game-winning assist.
Frequent Player
Earthquakes midfielder Magnus Eriksson made his 50th MLS appearance on Saturday, starting and playing 90 minutes.
Moving Up the Rankings
Goalkeeper Daniel Vega has now recorded six shutouts this season and three in his last four games. He currently has a 295-minute shutout streak at home. Vega's six shutouts are tied for second most in the Western Conference, trailing only the LA Galaxy's David Bingham (7). Vega is one of just three goalkeepers in MLS with 60+ saves and 6+ shutouts this season (DC - Bill Hamid; LA - David Bingham).
Beating LA
Friday night's match will be the second meeting between San Jose and the LA Galaxy in 2019. The Earthquakes previously earned a 3-0 victory over the Galaxy on June 29 at Stanford Stadium in front of 50,850 fans. The Quakes are 3-1-1 in their last five league meetings against LA and have outscored their rivals 11-5 in that span.

THIS WEEK IN EARTHQUAKES HISTORY
July 9, 1999 - Acquired Forward Chris Wondolowski in 2010 SuperDraft from Houston.
Chris Wondolowski rejoined his hometown team as part of a trade with the Dynamo, sending Wondolowski and a second-round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft to San Jose in exchange for Cam Weaver on June 9, 2009. Since returning to San Jose, Wondolowski has shattered Landon Donovan's MLS all-time goal-scoring record and currently has 152. He needs just two more this year to reach 10 goals for the 10th straight season.
RENO 1868 FC UPDATE
Reno 1868 FC midfielder Seth Casiple and Earthquakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski were named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 17. Casiple recorded an assist and the game-winning goal in Reno 1868 FC's match against the Portland Timbers 2 on Wednesday, June 26. Marcinkowski allowed a single goal against T2 and recorded his first shutout of the year in a home match against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, June 29.
Earthquakes Homegrown Players Marcinkowski, Gilbert Fuentes (M), Cade Cowell (F), and Jacob Akanyirige (D) were all in the starting XI in Wednesday night's 4-0 triumph over Rio Grande Valley FC at Greater Nevada Field.
Wednesday's win marked Marcinkowski's second shutout win of the season, the team's fourth in 2019. Fuentes, now at three starts in four appearances, was credited with the assist on midfielder Sam Gleadle's second goal of the night in the 45th minute, marking the 17-year-old's second assist of the season.
Gleadle tallied the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute. He joined Corey Hertzog as the second Reno 1868 FC player to score two goals in a single half this season. Gleadle wasn't finished after scoring two goals in the first half. He was credited with the assist on forward Corey Hertzog's goal in 48th minute, putting Reno up 3-0 with plenty of time left to build on that lead. Defender Zach Carroll tallied the final goal of the night for Reno, his first of the season.
Hertzog's goal brought him level with ex-Reno 1868 FC forward Brian Brown team-leading scoring record of eight goals in 2019. Reno announced the transfer of Brown to FK Partizani of the Albanian Superliga on Friday, July 5. The Jamaica native had been a part of Reno 1868 FC since the club's inaugural season in 2017. Brown departs from Reno as the club's all-time leading goal scorer with 28 goals.
Reno are now 9-4-5 and three points behind Western Conference leaders Phoenix Rising FC. Reno will host Liga MX's Club America U-20s in an international friendly match on Friday, July 12.
Reno resume USL Championship action on Wednesday, July 17 when they face OKC Energy FC at Taft Stadium.
