SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Chicago Fire FC 2-1 last Sunday at PayPal Park. The win sees San Jose improve to 4-0-1 at home under interim head coach Alex Covelo.

Following their efforts on Sunday, Benji Kikanović and JT Marcinkowski were selected to Major League Soccer's Team of the Week for Week 18. Kikanović scored two goals, including the game-winner, while Marcinkowski made five saves.

The Earthquakes are now preparing for two consecutive road matches, first traveling to Canada to face Toronto FC on Saturday, July 9. The match will kick off from BMO Field at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

First Brace

Forward Benji Kikanovic scored his first and second goals of the season and fifth and sixth goals of his MLS career. His second goal was also the second game-winning goal of his MLS career. It marked the first multi-goal game of his MLS career.

Playmaker

Midfielder Jamiro Monteiro tallied his sixth assist of the season, tied for eighth most in MLS, and 27th assist of his MLS career. It also marked his first game-winning assist of the season and ninth of his MLS career.

The Quakes have only lost one of their last five matches against Toronto FC (2-1-2), defeating the Canadian side 2-1 in their last visit to BMO Field on May 26, 2019.

Kikanović and Marcinkowski Selected to MLS Team of the Week

San Jose Earthquakes forward Benji Kikanović and goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski have been selected to Major League Soccer's Team of the Week for Week 18 following the Earthquakes' 2-1 home win against Chicago Fire FC on Sunday. Additionally, Kikanović was one of four finalists for the MLS Player of the Week honor.

Eduardo 'Chofis' Lopez Returns to Chivas de Guadalajara

The Earthquakes announced on Monday that midfielder Eduardo 'Chofis' Lopez has concluded his 18-month loan with San Jose and will now return to Chivas de Guadalajara. Chofis, 27, joined the Quakes on a year-long loan ahead of the 2021 MLS season before his loan was extended through June 2022. He finished his time in San Jose with 13 goals and four assists in 36 appearances, including one goal in four appearances this season.

EARTHQUAKES II UPDATE

Earthquakes II earned one point in a 1-1 home draw against Houston Dynamo 2 last Friday at PayPal Park. Quakes II would later fall to Dynamo 2 in a penalty shootout 4-3.

Quakes II will next hit the road for three consecutive road matches, first traveling to face North Texas SC on Sunday, July 10. Kickoff from Choctaw Stadium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast live on MLSNEXTPro.com.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Quakes Academy season concluded after the Boys' U13s, U14s, U15s and U17s competed in the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs in Dallas, Texas last week. The Quakes' U17s defeated the Barca Residency Academy 2-0 before falling to Orlando City SC in penalties 4-3 following a 2-2 draw. The Quakes' U15s were eliminated with a 3-0 defeat to NYCFC in the Round of 32.

The Quakes U13s and U14s participated in the MLS NEXT Showcase, with the two squads defeating LAFC in each of their age group (U13s W 1-0; U14s W 2-0).
