The San Jose Earthquakes continue their preseason training in Cancún, with their first preseason match later today. The Quakes announced last Tuesday the acquisition of Mexican center back Oswaldo Alanís on a one-year loan with the possibility to extend from Mexico's Chivas de Guadalajara. The team also recently welcomed the return of American midfielder Jackson Yueill and Peruvian defender Marcos Lopez to camp from national team duty.

Earthquakes Acquire Alanís on Loan

Alanís will occupy an international spot on the Quakes' roster, pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC. Alanís is just the third player with Mexico National Team experience to sign with the Earthquakes and first since Francisco Uribe in 1998. The Mexican center back played under Almeyda with Chivas in 2015, where he led them to Liga MX (Clausura 2017), Copa MX (Apertura 2015; Clausura 2017), Supercopa MX (2016) and Concacaf Champions League (2018) titles. He was named to the 2018 Concacaf Champions League Best XI and was the only defender to score multiple goals during the tournament. Find out more here.

Chivas vs. Leon Match

The Earthquakes announced last Monday that Earthquakes Stadium will host a friendly between Chivas and León on March 28. The match, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and will feature a Fan Fest prior to the match at 12:30 p.m.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Reno 1868 FC announced on Friday the signing of defender Tony Alfaro to a 2020 USL contract, pending league and federation approval. Alfaro played three seasons in Seattle, from 2016-2018. In 2017, Alfaro had his best MLS season to date when he started eight games. This past season, Alfaro split time between Chivas de Guadalajara and Club Atlético Zapatepec, after he was loaned from Chivas in July.

Reno also announced last Thursday the signing of wide attacker Christiano François to a 2020 USL contract, pending league and federation approval. François has tallied 12 goals and 19 assists in his four-year USL career. François, from Haiti, played in two games for the Haiti National Team in September 2019.

Reno 1868 FC has set a preseason friendly for Feb. 29 at Greater Nevada Field against San Diego Loyal SC. San Diego, led by head coach Landon Donovan, is entering its inaugural season. Reno 1868 FC head coach Ian Russell and Donovan have history together, as they were teammates on the Quakes from 2001-2004, winning MLS Cups in both 2001 and 2003.

Reno 1868 FC will feature an Academy team this season for the first time in team history. The U-17 squad will represent Reno this May at the National USL Academy Cup in Tampa Bay, Fla.

ACADEMY UPDATE

Six players of the San Jose Earthquakes Girls' Academy have been called to the United States U-14 West Regional Mini-Camp in Chula Vista, Calif. from Feb. 5-9. The Quakes, Colorado Rapids and Legends FC will be the most-represented clubs at the camp; each sending six players. Find out more here.

The Boys' Academy returned to action last Saturday with the U-13 and U-14 teams winning over San Juan FC 7-0 and 3-0, respectively. The Academy U-17 and U-19 teams faced the UPSL's Monterey County Jaguars also on Saturday in a friendly match at Evergreen Valley College in preparation for their second phase of the season. The Quakes Academy U-19 and U-17 teams earned victories, winning 4-1 and 3-0, respectively as well.

The Girls' Academy will play their first match on Feb. 8 vs. Utah Royals FC in Arizona.
