Earthquakes Weekly Update: August 23, 2021

San Jose Earthquakes News Release


Last week, the San Jose Earthquakes picked up four points after a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United FC and a 2-1 victory over the LA Galaxy on Tuesday and Friday night, respectively, extending their unbeaten streak to a league-best 10 matches (3-0-7). With the two results, San Jose improved to 6-7-8 and rose to seventh place in the Western Conference.

While the Quakes do not have a match this week, 17-year-old forward Cade Cowell will represent the club at the 2021 MLS All-Star Game. The MLS All-Stars will face the Liga MX All-Stars at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 25. The match kicks off at 6:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on FS1 and Univision. For more information about the event, click here.

The Earthquakes return to action when they host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Sept. 4, presented by Audi.

Against the North

San Jose is now 4-3-2 all-time against Minnesota, including a 2-2-1 record at PayPal Park.

400 Appearances

Forward Chris Wondolowski made his 400th MLS appearance, entering the match in the 86th minute. He became just the seventh player, fifth non-goalkeeper, and first forward to reach the milestone.

LAST GAME VS. LA GALAXY (8/20)

10 Straight Unbeaten

The Quakes extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches (3-0-7). It marks the club's first unbeaten stretch of 10+ matches in a single season since July-Oct. 2005 (11-0-3). The 10-match unbeaten streak is the third longest in Quakes history (2005 - 14; 2001 - 12).

Road Warriors

The Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak on the road to six matches (2-0-4). It marks the club's longest unbeaten streak away from home since July-Oct. 2005 (6-0-0)

Conquered LA

San Jose is now 27-34-16 all-time against the LA Galaxy, including a 9-22-6 record away from home.

Locking Down the Back

The Quakes have now allowed one or fewer goals in nine consecutive matches, conceding a total of seven goals in that span.

JeBo's First for SJ

Jeremy Ebobisse scored his first goal since joining San Jose via trade from Portland earlier this month. It marks his fifth goal of the season and 27th of his MLS career. He has now scored seven goals in eight total appearances vs. the LA Galaxy in his MLS career.

Playmaker

Midfielder Chofis tallied an assist on Ebobisse's goal, marking his second assist of the season and of his MLS career.

Getting Involved

Defender Luciano Abecasis tallied an assist on Ebobisse's goal, marking his second assist of the season and of his MLS career.

Topgolf Live at PayPal Park Postponed

The San Jose Earthquakes and Topgolf Live announced today that the event at PayPal Park in San Jose scheduled for August 26-29 has been postponed until 2022. More information about the rescheduled date will be announced soon. Find out more here.

Three Earthquakes Named to MLS Team of the Week

Three Earthquakes were selected to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 21: forward Jeremy Ebobisse, defender Luciano Abecasis, and head coach Matias Almeyda. Read more here.

QUAKES ON LOAN

Gilbert Fuentes and Casey Walls at Austin Bold FC

Casey Walls made his sixth appearance for Austin Bold FC, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute of a 1-1 draw against Rio Grande Valley FC. Bold FC improved to fourth (6-5-7, 25 pts.) in the USL Championship Mountain Division ahead of Monday evening's match against New Mexico United at Bold Stadium. Gilbert Fuentes was on the bench but did not feature.

Thomas Williamson at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC

Thomas Williamson made his 15th and 16th appearances for Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in a scoreless draw against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Wednesday, and a 4-1 victory over Atlanta United 2 on Sunday. Williamson tallied his fourth goal of 2021 on Sunday, scoring in the 26th minute to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. Pittsburgh improved to first (11-6-4, 37 pts.) in the USL Championship Atlantic Division.

Eric Calvillo at Orange County SC

Calvillo made his 13h and 14th appearances for Orange County SC in a 3-0 loss to the Tacoma Defiance (8/18) and a 2-1 victory against San Diego Loyal SC (8/21). Orange County SC remains in second (8-7-5, 38 pts.) in the USL Championship Pacific Division.
