San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Jon Busch to a new contract. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Busch has been one of the leading goalkeepers in MLS during his two seasons with the Earthquakes. The former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year signed with San Jose on March 30, 2010, and immediately helped lead the club to its first postseason berth since returning to the league in 2008. That season, the New York native helped set a club record for shutouts in a season while accounting for seven of the team's 13 clean sheets. Last season, he led the league in saves with 113 and notched seven shutouts while starting 33 of San Jose's 34 games.
Prior to joining San Jose, Busch played three seasons with the Chicago Fire, posting 21 shutouts in 63 regular-season appearances. In 2008 and 2009, Busch helped the Fire advance to the Eastern Conference Finals while playing every minute of every match. He took home 2008 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors while tying the Fire club record for shutouts in a single season with 10.
The 11-year veteran made his MLS debut in 2002 with the Columbus Crew and remained there through the 2006 season. During his time with the Crew, Busch had 25 clean sheets in 84 appearances. During his MLS career to date, Busch has compiled a 74-61-60 record with 60 shutouts.
In 2005, Busch earned his first appearance for the United States National Team, a 3-0 win over Colombia. He was again called into national team camp in 2009 and dressed against Sweden on Jan. 24, but did not play.
