San Jose Earthquakes News Release
Portland, Ore. (Saturday, August 3, 2005) The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 2-0 win over the USL First Divisions Portland Timbers in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at PGE Park. The Quakes now move on to the quaterfinals where they will face the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium. Tickets for the match go on sale Friday, August 5 at 10:00 a.m. PT and the game will be Bonus Game B for Earthquakes season ticket holders. Wade Barrett and Brian Mullan scored goals for San Jose and Jon Conway earned his sixth career shutout in his Open Cup career.
The Timbers had the games first chance in the opening five minutes as Fadi Afash retrieved a ball 20 yards from goal in the middle of the field. Afash moved toward goal and hit a low shot, but Quakes goalkeeper Conway went down to make the save.
A good combination between Alejandro Moreno and Brian Mullan sprung Ian Russell for the Quakes first opportunity 10 minutes into the match. Moreno found Mullan on the right wing and he slipped a ball through to Russell to his right. Russell moved in alone at a bad angle and fired a shot, but Josh Saunders slid out to make the stop.
Barrett opened the scoring in the 27th minute with an easy finish off a perfect Brad Davis cross. Davis received the ball on the left wing and whipped a cross to the penalty spot, where Barrett found himself wide open. The Quakes captain calmly slotted the ball to the right corner for the 1-0 lead.
Dan Antoniuk nearly evened the score with a brilliant individual effort in the 58th minute. The Timbers forward picked up a pass with Danny Califf right on his back and after a few feints was able to free himself for a shot. His low shot slipped just past the far post.
Tom Poltl followed a minute later with a dipping shot that Conway was forced to tip over the bar.
Mullan gave San Jose some breathing room after latching onto a long ball from Ian Russell and tipping it past a hard-charging Saunders. Russell had the ball on the right wing and drove a ball over the defense to Mullan who beat Saunders to the ball and touched it past him with the outside of his right foot.
The Quakes return to MLS action on Saturday, August 6 as they take on the Columbus Crew at 7:00 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium. The game can be heard live on the radio on 1590 AM KLIV (English) and 1370 AM KZSF (Spanish). Saturday night is Hawaiian night and one lucky fan will win a free trip for two to Honolulu, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines and Aston ResortQuest. The first 7,500 fans will receive costume leis.
Quotes
Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear, on game: Tonight, we did well limiting their chances and we created a number of opportunities for ourselves. Josh Saunders made some good saves to keep them in it. Give Portland credit because they played hard and never gave up. I was happy with our performance.
Kinnear, on return after long layoff: It took us a little bit of time to get into it, but then we started to play well. We did some good stuff in both halves and created problems for them. We moved the ball well and I dont think we showed too much rust.
Wade Barrett, on goal: We had a lot of joy attacking on the outside and that play was a perfect example of that. Brad (Davis) got the ball wide and Brian (Mullan) made a great run to the near post and I was wide open in front of the net. I was able to finish it which was nice because we had some good chances in the first half that we didnt score.
Brad Davis, on return to Quakes: I feel very comfortable with these guys. I was gone for some games, but we have a great team so it is easy to play with these guys. Hopefully we can continue to have success.
Brian Mullan, on goal: Kelly (Gray) played the ball out to Ian (Russell) on the right hand side and I checked back to him and then I spun off. Ian (Russell) played a perfect ball and I ran onto it. I teased the goalie a bit and then I put it right by him.
Jon Conway, on game: Good performance after having 10 days off. Our guys matched their intensity and had a strong game tonight. The guys in front of me did a good job tonight, especially Danny (Califf) and Eddie (Robinson) and we were able to go through. We also scored two nice goals.
