San Jose Earthquakes News Release
San Jose (Thursday, July 11, 2002) - Major League Soccer announced today that San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop will be the coach of the MLS All-Star Team in the 2002 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game. The match will feature the best of MLS against the U.S. Men's National Team 2002 World Cup heroes Aug. 3 at 12:30 p.m. PT at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Yallop becomes the first coach in San Jose history to coach in the MLS mid-season showcase, earning the honor after directing his club to a League-leading 26 points (8-4-2 record) through the midway point of the league's seventh season. The former D.C. United and Tampa Bay Mutiny assistant coach narrowly edged the Dallas Burn's Mike Jeffries, who led his upstart Texas team to a 6-3-5 mark (23 points) through 14 games. Yallop will make his first MLS All-Star appearance after masterminding San Jose's worst-to-first turnaround last season.
"It is a wonderful honor to be named the All-Star coach," said Yallop. "All the credit has to go to our players. They have worked hard all year to get us into a good position in the league. It should be a great event."
As part of his duties Yallop will be charged with selecting the reserves for his team following the announcement of both the U.S. roster and the MLS All-Star Starting Lineup next week. Starters for the MLS Team are being determined through online fan balloting (at www.MLSnet.com), and votes submitted by MLS players, media, coaches and general managers. Online fan balloting will continue through Wednesday, July 17.
The reigning MLS Coach of the Year, Yallop owns a lifetime 28-13-8 MLS record since taking over as Earthquakes head coach Feb. 2, 2001. Yallop and San Jose's impressive run includes capturing the 2001 MLS Cup Championship, while becoming the first coach to lead a team from last place one season to the championship the next. Joining Yallop in Washington, D.C. will be Earthquakes assistant coach Dominic Kinnear, goalkeeper coach Tim Hanley, and the rest of the team staff.
Yallop is already familiar with two U.S. World Cup stars, coaching mercurial forward Landon Donovan and defender Jeff Agoos on the Quakes. The United States team, which advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time in more than 70 years, featured 11 current and five former MLS players.
The 2002 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game featuring the U.S. National Team offers four levels of ticket pricing, ranging from $27 to $55 for individuals, and $22 to $45 for groups of 20 or more. For group sales and ticket information call D.C. United at (703) 478-6600; or go online at www.dcunited.com. For individual tickets, call TicketMaster or go online at www.ticketmaster.com.
