San Jose Earthquakes News Release

San Jose (Monday, January 12, 2004) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that Johnny Moore has resigned his position as general manager of the 2003 MLS Cup Champion Earthquakes due to personal reasons, effective immediately. Moore joined the Earthquakes as general manager on February 8, 2002.

"I want everyone to know that it has been a great two years for me here," said Moore. "I want to thank everyone in the Earthquakes organization. I want to thank the staff, the coaches and the players. Most importantly, I want to thank the fans that truly got behind this club and made everything that we have accomplished over the past two years possible. I have always been one of those fans and I will continue to be a fan of the San Jose Earthquakes."

In his first season as general manager in 2002, he oversaw an attendance increase of over 14% and a significant increase in sponsorship, while the team finished 2002 with the second best record in MLS. This past season, Moore helped the team capture its second MLS Cup Championship, defeating the Chicago Fire 4-2 in the MLS Cup Final, as the team again saw an increase in ticket revenue.

Moore has had a distinguished career in professional soccer as an administrator and a player for the past 30 years. He spent four seasons (1974-1977) with the North American Soccer League (NASL) San Jose Earthquakes as a player (forward/midfielder) and administrator. After three years as the assistant general manager and player for the Earthquakes, he became the Vice President and General Manager for the 1977 season. Moore left the Earthquakes after the 1977 season to play with the Oakland Stompers for his final season in the NASL. Moore also enjoyed a successful international career, as he was a member of the United States National Team from 1971 - 1976. He made 12 appearances for the U.S., including four in World Cup Qualifying for the 1974 World Cup.

For his contributions to soccer in the United States and Northern California, Moore was inducted into the United States Soccer Hall of Fame and the California Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997, along with being inducted into the California Youth Soccer Hall of Fame in 1995.

Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear will continue to lead the Earthquakes into the 2004 MLS SuperDraft this Friday, January 16 in Charlotte, NC. The Earthquakes will begin preseason training under Kinnear the first week of February.
