San Jose Earthquakes News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a hard-fought match to the New England Revolution 2-1 at a snowy Gillette Stadium on Saturday.
Innocent and Chris Wondolowski combined for the Quakes first opportunity of the match in the 11th minute. Innocent made space for himself on the left wing and beat one defender before playing a give-and-go with Wondolowski. On the return pass, Innocent hit a long-range shot that just went over the bar.
One minute after the Quakes attack, Clarence Goodson made a goal-saving block in the six-yard box to keep the game scoreless. Shaun Francis redirected a cross from the left wing, but the ball fell to Kelyn Rowe right in front of goal. Rowe hit a shot on frame, but Goodson came sliding in to clear the ball away.
The Revolution broke out in front in the 21st minute on a deflected shot by Rowe. Lee Nguyen found space on the right wing and rolled a pass back to Rowe at the right edge of the penalty box. Rowe cracked a shot that deflected off a Quakes defender and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham made a superlative stop on Rowe 10 minutes before halftime. A cross from the left wing found Rowe in the box. He used his thigh to put the ball on target, but Bingham jumped and palmed away the shot to keep the score 1-0.
Rowe struck again late in the half off a set piece for a 2-0 Revolution lead. Chris Tierney's cross was knocked down to the near post and Rowe volleyed a shot past Bingham.
The Quakes got back into the game through Wondolowski in the 62nd minute. Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi flicked a ball into the box for Goodson, who was clipped by Scott Caldwell just inside the 18-yard box and the referee pointed to the spot. Wondolowski then slotted home the penalty to the left of Revs' goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.
San Jose created several chances in the final minutes of the game. Matias Perez Garcia whipped in a corner kick and Bernardez headed to the near post, but Shuttleworth tipped it over the bar. Later, Wondolowski blasted a left-footed shot from outside the box, but his attempt was also turned away by Shuttleworth. The Quakes final opportunity came in the waning moments when Pierazzi's short-range effort sailed over the goal.
The Quakes return to Avaya Stadium on Sunday, April 5 to take on Real Salt Lake at 2 p.m. PT, presented by Supercuts. The match will air live on ESPN2, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF and 7,500 fans will receive an Earthquakes magnetic schedule, courtesy of Supercuts.
