Revolution Tops San Jose 2-1 for Initial Win of 2015

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution recorded their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 at Gillette Stadium. Kelyn Rowe scored both goals for the Revs, who entered the game without a goal in any of their first three games of the year.

Rowe scored each of his goals in the opening 45 minutes, sending the Revs into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead. He opened the scoring in the 21st minute, breaking a string of 291 minutes to open the season without a goal. Daigo Kobayashi intercepted a Shaun Francis pass and played the ball forward to Lee Nguyen on the right wing. Nguyen then found Rowe on the edge of the area and his right-footed shot deflected off Francis and past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Revs.

Rowe nearly doubled the New England lead in the 35th minute, only for Bingham to palm the ball away just before it crossed the line. However, just two minutes later, Rowe would get his second, bundling the ball home from close range after Darrius Barnes had headed down a Chris Tierney free kick, making the score 2-0.

San Jose pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when Scott Caldwell was called for a foul on Clarence Goodson at the top of the New England penalty area, and forward Chris Wondolowski converted the resulting penalty kick, cutting the Revs' lead to 2-1.

The score would stay that way thanks to a pair of late saves by Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth was called upon in the 83rd minute to tip a Victor Bernardez header over the bar and then again in second half stoppage time when he punched away a drive from Wondolowski, sealing the full three points for the Revs as they held on for the 2-1 win.

KELYN ROWE - Scored a pair of first-half goals and consistently threatened the San Jose defense to lead the Revs to their first win of the season. This was Rowe's first multi-goal game since August 2013 and he set career-highs with seven shots and five shots on goal.

Next Game

The Revolution will be back in action on Saturday, April 4 when they travel to Colorado to face the Rapids at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. That game, which is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. ET, will be shown locally on Comcast SportsNet and simulcast on 98.5 The Sports Hub with Brad Feldman and Paul Mariner. WMVX 1570 AM Nossa Radio USA will carry the game locally on the radio in Portuguese.
