SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes were defeated by Club America 2-1 at Avaya Stadium as part of the International Champions Cup North America Presented by Guinness. It marked the first time the Earthquakes took on Club America since drawing 1-1 with the Mexican side on September 18, 2002 at 3COM Park in San Francisco.

In the 14th minute, the Quakes nearly took an early lead on the left foot of midfielder Matias Perez Garcia. With a set piece just outside the penalty area, Perez Garcia curled his free kick up and over the wall, smacking the near post. Midfielder Sanna Nyassi hustled to clean up the rebound, but his effort was blocked by a sliding defender.

Ten minutes later, San Jose found the back of the net. Perez Garcia whipped in a corner kick and forward Quincy Amarikwa was the first man to it. Amarikwa's header forced a frantic save by keeper Hugo Gonzalez, who had very little time to react to it. The ball was then headed off the line by a Club America defender before being headed to the far post and in by Quakes defender Clarence Goodson.

Three minutes into first half stoppage time, a skirmish broke out that resulted in red cards being handed out to Nyassi and Club America defender Paolo Goltz, forcing the two teams to play with 10 men for the entirety of the second half.

In the 76th minute, Club America leveled the score line. Forward Andres Andrade slotted a low shot from beyond the penalty area that skipped just inside the far post.

Club America took a 2-1 lead in the 83rd minute when midfielder Francisco Rivera hit a line drive from distance that narrowly evaded the outstretched fingertips of keeper Bryan Meredith.

San Jose returns to MLS action on Friday, July 17, when they travel to take on the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on UniMas, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
