San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Earthquakes defender Mike Zaher visited Norwood Creek Elementary School Tuesday, September 15 as part of the Amway Global Kicks for Kids Program. Zaher was first introduced to the students by Norwood teacher, Brett Lotz, and was welcomed with overwhelming cheers and applause from the fifth and sixth graders.
The Nevada native stressed the impact a healthy diet and active lifestyle had on his life growing up playing multiple sports. Zaher explained to the children how the choices he made as a child to eat healthy foods helped him achieve his goal of becoming a professional athlete. The children were all very active in sports and wanted to know his daily food routine so they could try to eat the same things as well. Zaher also emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and drinking a lot of water. He told them that especially in the California heat, it is important to drink a lot of water to combat dehydration.
After Zaher finished his speech, he opened the floor to a question and answer session. The children asked a variety of questions ranging from his favorite color to questions about the Earthquakes team and the current season. Zaher then transitioned from the Q&A to a soccer skills demonstration. Zaher invited several of the children to the stage and gave them the chance to juggle the ball for as long as they could. Lotz also joined in the fun and showed off some of his juggling skills and tallied 21 headers with Zaher in front of the children.
To conclude the afternoon, Zaher signed player cards and Earthquakes staff handed out over 150 jersey replica shirts and 150 tickets, donated by Amway Global, to the students to attend the Earthquakes next home game on September 15 at 8:00 p.m. PT against the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Earthquakes and Amway Global teamed up to create the Amway Global Kicks for Kids program in 2009. Through the program, Earthquakes players will visit 15 schools or community centers in the Bay Area to discuss the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. The next school visit will take place prior to the Quakes game on October 3 against the New York Red Bulls.
