San Jose Earthquakes News Release
San Jose (Friday, March 26, 2004) - The San Jose Earthquakes today announced a new partnership with 1590 KLIV that will see 26 of their 30 regular season matches broadcast on the local San Jose radio station. The twenty-six game package is the biggest English radio broadcast package in the history of the club, which returns to KLIV for the first time since 1998. KLIV previously aired San Jose games from 1996-1998.
"We are excited to announce our biggest radio package in team history," said Earthquakes President & General Manager Alexi Lalas. "Fans can now follow the Quakes home and road matches throughout the 2004 season. Both KLIV and the Earthquakes are highly committed to the San Jose community so we feel it will be a great partnership."
The Quakes first game on the radio will be the home opener on Saturday, April 10 as the Quakes take on the Chicago Fire in a rematch of the 2003 MLS Cup at 1:00 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium. After that match, KLIV will air every match except for the three games that kick off at 1:00 p.m. PT. (Saturday, May 1 vs. D.C. United, Saturday, July 10 vs. MetroStars and Saturday, July 17 vs. Colorado Rapids.)
"KLIV is thrilled to be carrying Earthquakes games in 2004," said KLIV program director George Sampson. "We are a locally focused radio station and we feel that the Earthquakes are an important part of this community. We think that this partnership will be a great fit for both parties."
2004 marks the first season that the Quakes will broadcast both home and road matches. From 1996-1998 and in 2003, only San Jose road games were available on the radio.
"We are delighted with our new partnership with the Earthquakes," said President and General Manager of Empire Broadcasting Bob Kieve. "They are the current champions of Major League Soccer and we are looking forward to another great season."
1590 KLIV is Silicon Valley's News Station. The station has a strong local focus on the news of San Jose and the Silicon Valley, along with national and international news from CNN. The station delves into local stories and issues that frequently are not covered by San Francisco stations and provides Silicon Valley commuters with traffic reports eight times each hour, more than any other Bay Area station. 1590 KLIV is locally owned by Empire Broadcasting Company.
