Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Friday, March 26) - Columbus Crew President and General Manager Jim Smith announced today that The Crew has acquired Costa Rican forward Erick Scott as a discovery player. Scott's deal is pending approval of his work permit and passing his physical.
Scott was acquired on a one-year loan from LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica, with The Crew having the option to purchase his contract outright after one year. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. He will be classified as a Transitional International, meaning he will not take up one of The Crew's three Senior International slots.
"It'll be a great experience, it's a matter of going and taking advantage of this opportunity," said Scott. "I know little of Columbus and the team, but I just need to head over there and score goals, which is what I know how to do."
The 22-year-old Scott has made at least three appearances for the full national team, scoring against Cuba in the 2003 Gold Cup. He has also been a fixture on Costa Rica's youth national teams, including this past February's CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Mexico where he played all five games and scored two goals in helping Costa Rica's U-23 team qualify for the summer Olympics in Greece.
"We continue to put more pieces in place for the 2004 season," said Smith. "Erick will be an exciting player to watch."
He has been with Alajuelense in the Costa Rican first division since May of 2001. Scott has scored over 40 goals for Alajuelense and helped it capture the 2001-2002, and 2002-2003 league titles. The 5-7 striker has also been an MLS killer, scoring goals in the CONCACAF Champions cup against New England in 2003 and San Jose in 2004.
"Erick is a very young and talented player with a tremendous upside," said Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis. "He will be a good compliment to both Jeff Cunningham and Edson Buddle and gives us some great attacking options."
