San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes acquired second-year forward Mark Sherrod from Orlando City SC on Thursday in exchange for the club's natural second round pick (No. 25 overall) in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
The Knoxville, Tenn. Native was a second round pick (No. 32 overall) of the Houston Dynamo in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He joined Orlando City SC through Wednesday's MLS Expansion Draft.
"Mark is a good pickup for the team," said head coach Dominic Kinnear. "I'm happy for a chance to work with him again. The players, the staff and the fans will enjoy his attitude and work ethic both on and off the field."
Sherrod, 24, showed promise early in his rookie season, recording two goals and one assist in nine games as a member of the Dynamo. However, the six-foot-three striker tore his left anterior-cruciate ligament in the 12th minute of a match against D.C. United on May 21. Sherrod was in the midst of his third start in as many games when the injury occurred. Two games prior, he tallied a brace in a 5-2 loss against Real Salt Lake and then followed up with an assist in his next outing, a 1-0 win against the LA Galaxy.
Prior to his MLS career, the Knoxville, Tenn. native starred for Memphis. He was the team captain during his senior season in 2013 and earned First-Team All-American Athletic Conference honors. He was the Conference USA Player of the Year in 2012 and 2011 and finished his career ranked third in school history with 42 goals.
