Earthquakes Acquire Brazilian Defender Rodrigues on Loan from Gremio

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired center back Rodrigues on a 12-month loan with option to buy or extend through the end of 2023 from Brazilian side Grêmio. Rodrigues will occupy an international spot on the Quakes' roster, pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC.

"We're excited about the opportunity to bring in a player of his age and quality," said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. "Rodrigues has competed for one of the most historic clubs in Brazil and appeared in many of South America's best international competitions. We're looking forward to him joining our locker room."

Since joining Grêmio in 2019, Rodrigues has made 51 league appearances, including 44 in the top-flight Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. He also made eight appearances for Grêmio in the famed Copa Libertadores, where he tallied two goals and an assist, made five appearances in Copa do Brasil, and made two appearances in Copa Sudamericana, among other competitions.

Rodrigues, 24, played his youth career at ABC Futebol Clube and Cruzeiro before making his professional debut with ABC in 2017. He was loaned to Grêmio in January 2019 before joining on a permanent transfer in August of the same year.
