Early Power Surge Not Enough, Giants Fall 6-4

August 17, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants suffered their second straight loss to the Inland Empire 66ers with a 6-4 setback on Wednesday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. The Giants hit three home runs over the first three innings to take an early lead, but did not score for the remainder of the contest as the Sixers rallied to secure the win. The loss was San Jose's (61-49, 21-23 second half) seventh in their last 10 games overall.

Yorlis Rodriguez (3-for-4, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI) had three extra-base hits - two doubles and a two-run home run - to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. Jared Dupere (1-for-4, HR, RBI) added a solo shot while Alexander Suarez (1-for-4, HR, RBI) hit an inside-the-park home run.

Eric Silva started on the mound for San Jose and began his day with a scoreless top of the first inning pitching around a leadoff double. Silva then quickly retired the first two batters of the top of the second before Inland Empire knocked out three straight hits to produce a pair of runs. Myles Emmerson started the rally with a double down the right field line before Tate Kolwyck doubled down the left field line to bring home the first run of the game. Jeremy Arocho followed with an RBI single to push the 66ers lead to 2-0.

San Jose though would answer in the bottom of the second hitting back-to-back home runs for the second time in three games. Victor Bericoto worked a leadoff walk before Rodriguez stepped to the plate with one out and launched a game-tying two-run home run to left center. The homer was Rodriguez's 13th of the season.

Suarez was up next and he hammered a fly ball off the top of the fence in deep left center. As the ball bounced away from both Inland Empire outfielders and rolled back towards the infield, Suarez raced around the bases and beat the relay home for an inside-the-park home run. It was Suarez's 11th round-tripper of the season and the first inside-the-park homer hit by a San Jose Giants player this year.

An inning later, Dupere crushed a 417-foot solo home run to right to stretch the Giants lead to 4-2.

San Jose, however, wouldn't score again and Inland Empire rallied for a second straight day. Tucker Flint led off the top of the fourth with a home run to right to trim the Giants lead to 4-3. Kolwyck then singled with one out, advanced to second on a Silva wild pitch and scored on Arocho's RBI single to tie the game 4-4.

Joe Kemlage relieved Silva to begin the top of the fifth and stranded a runner at third base in his first inning of work to keep the game tied. The 66ers though would push across a single run in the sixth to reclaim the lead. An outstanding throw from Grant McCray in the top of the sixth temporarily kept the game tied as the San Jose center fielder fired a perfect strike to the plate to retire Emmerson, who was attempting to score on BJ Boyd's single. However with two outs and two runners on base, Edgar Quero produced an RBI single on the 11th pitch of his at-bat to give Inland Empire a 5-4 lead.

The Giants threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Rodriguez led off with a double, but was stranded at second as Suarez popped out before Rayner Santana and Anyesber Sivira both struck out.

An unearned run against Kemlage in the top of the seventh then made it a 6-4 game. After Kemlage set down the first two batters, David Calabrese reached safely on a fielding error committed by Bericoto at first base. Flint then smacked a double off the fence in left to score Calabrese all the way from first to extend the 66ers lead to two runs.

San Jose then wouldn't manage another baserunner for the rest of the day. Inland Empire reliever Michael Darrell-Hicks retired all six batters he faced, including three via the strikeout, over the seventh and eighth innings. Max Gieg then needed only eight pitches to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to seal the Sixers victory.
