Early Lead Holds Up for Lynx

The Ottawa Lynx scored early on their way to a 4-2 win over the Red Wings Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Garrett Jones and Jose Morales drove in the Rochester runs; the Wings open a four-game series at home Monday night against the Toledo Mud Hens.

The Lynx scored a pair of first inning runs against Wings starter Jeremy Cummings, with Gary Burnham and Chris Coste contributing RBI hits. The Lynx added an unearned run in the third to go up 3-0.

Ottawa starter Zach Segovia didn't allow a hit until Trent Oeltjen's one-out single in the fifth. Oeltjen stole second but Segovia got the next two batters to get out of trouble. Ottawa added another run in the sixth, and in that inning Ricky Barrett replaced Cummings on the mound. The Red Wings got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, with run-scoring doubles from Jones and Morales making the score 4-2 Ottawa.

Barrett tossed 1 1/3 innings (one hit, one strikeout) in his first appearance of the season after missing time with an sore elbow. Mike Venafro

With two outs and a runner on base in the ninth against Brian Sanches, Lew Ford doubled to set up runners at second and third; Sanches struck out Jones to end the threat and the game.

NOTES: Catcher Chris Heintz was pulled from the starting lineup right before game time, fueling speculation that he could be headed to Minnesota with Joe Mauer (strained quad muscle) awaiting results of a Sunday MRI test...Matt Tolbert entered the game leading the league in hitting; he went 0-for-3 with a walk Sunday to drop his average to .381 ...Jones is the Twins Minor League Player of the Month for April...Jones, 25, batted .338 (23-for-68) with six doubles, three home runs and 15 rbi...he also scored nine times in his 17 games...Beloit (A, Midwest League) righthanded pitcher Jeff Manship is the Twins Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April...in five games, Manship, 22, went 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA (32.0 ip, 3 er)...he walked just three batters while striking out 36 and holding opposing hitters to a .147 batting average...Manship was! the Twins 14th round selection in the 2006 First-Year Player draft; on Saturday night Manship struck out nine in seven innings to help Beloit to an 8-1 win over Great Lakes.
