Iowa Cubs News Release

The Sacramento River Cats' stellar offense helped them defeat the Iowa Cubs 9-1 Thursday afternoon at Principal park.

The River Cats got on the board in the first inning and never looked back. Aaron Cunningham hit a solo homer for the early 1-0 lead. Sacramento made it a 3-0 game in the top of the third inning when Matt Carson hit a solo home run. Former Iowa Cub Eric Patterson then reached base on an Iowa error before being driven in on Chris Denorfia's sacrifice fly.

The Cubs tallied their lone run of the ball game in the third inning. With two outs, David Macias singled and scored on Sam Fuld's triple to right field. Macias, Fuld and Chris Robinson collected Iowa's only hits on the day while the team was out-hit by Sacramento 14-3.

The River Cats extended their advantage with a five-run ninth inning. Patterson led-off with a singled and advanced to third on Denorfia's double. Denorfia was 2-for-4 with an RBI on the day. Cunningham, who was 3-for-5, followed with a double of his own to drive in Patterson. Reliever Greg Reinhard then walked Daric Barton to load the bases for Danny Putnam. Putnam then launched a grand slam to right field for the 9-1 final.

Sacramento's Dana Eveland picked up the win, striking out nine Cubs over 6.2 innings of work. Iowa's Esmailin Caridad was tagged with the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits through six innings.

Iowa starts an eight-game roadtrip tomorrow. The team returns home to face Round Rock on June 6.
