Early innings too much to overcome for Fightins

The Fightin Phils (33-38) outhit the New Britain Rock Cats (38-32) on Saturday night but only managed two runs in a 5-2 loss. Perci Garner settled down after allowing five runs after the first two innings by giving up just one hit the rest of the way.

Aaron Altherr extended his hitting streak to 14 games in his first at-bat of the game and gave Reading a 1-0 single off Rock Cats starter Jason Wheeler as he hit a RBI single to score Albert Cartwright.

New Britain quickly took the lead off Perci Garner in the bottom of the 1st inning as they scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Aaron Hicks led off the inning with a single and Eddie Rosario was hit by a pitch to advance to first base. An error by Anthony Phillips on a ball hit by Nate Hanson gave the Rock Cats a 2-1 lead. Reynaldo Rodriguez followed with a RBI double and Brad Boyer added a sacrifice fly.

The Rock Cats extended the lead to 5-1 as Nat Hanson hit a RBI single off Garner in the bottom of the 2nd inning to score Eddie Rosario. Anthony Phillips hit a RBI single in the top of the 3rd inning off Wheeler to score Altherr to put the Fightins within three runs, 5-2.

Perci Garner pitched six innings and allowed five runs (three earned) off five hits and five walks with two strikeouts. Colton Murray tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

The Fightin Phils and New Britain Rock Cats wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 pm. Adam Loewen (0-0, 5.17 ERA) will be on the mound for the Fightin Phils.
