Baysox Falter Late in Loss

Bowie, Md. - In a game that featured four lead changes and two ties, the Baysox came out behind in a 7-6 loss to Binghamton Saturday night. The Baysox held a 5-3 lead after six innings, but the bullpen was tagged for four runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the B-Mets came from behind for the win.

Baysox first baseman Christian Walker fell a triple short of the cycle Saturday, as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. He leads the Eastern League with 18 home runs and 64 RBI this season.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead against Binghamton starter Steven Matz, who was making his Double-A debut. Ronald Bermudez hit a lead off single to right field and Nolan Reimold followed with a one-out walk. Walker brought Bermudez home with a single to left field to give Bowie a 1-0 lead.

Binghamton came back to take the lead in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. Darrell Ceciliani hit a lead off single to second base and Travis Taijeron followed with a home run to left field to give the B-Mets a 2-1 lead.

Bowie tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Walker hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base on a Dariel Alvarez groundout. Chris Marrero plated Walker with a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game 2-2.

Binghamton took the lead right back in the top of the fifth inning. Dilson Herrera hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base on a wild pitch. T.J. Rivera brought Herrera home with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the B-Mets a 3-2 lead.

The Baysox again tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. David Adams hit a lead off single to right field and stole second base before moving to third on a Garabez Rosa bunt single. Bermudez brought Adams home with a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game 3-3.

Bowie snagged its first lead since the first inning in the bottom of the sixth. Reimold drew a lead off walk and Walker followed with a two-run homer to left field that put the Baysox ahead 5-3.

The B-Mets battled back to retake the lead in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Anthony Vasquez. Rivera drew a lead off walk and scored on a Kevin Plawecki double to right field. Jayce Boyd followed with a single to right field that plated Plawecki and Boyd moved to second base after a fielding error by Bermudez. Reliever Steve Hensley then replaced Vasquez on the mound. With two outs and Boyd on third base, Hensley threw a wild pitch that allowed the go-ahead run to score giving Binghamton a 6-5 lead.

Binghamton added to the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Kyle Johnson hit a two-out double to center field and scored on a Plawecki single to left field to make the score 7-5.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning against Binghamton reliever Adam Kolarek. Reimold hit a lead off double to right field and Johnny Ruettiger then replaced him as a pinch-runner. Ruettiger moved to third base on a Walker groundout and scored on a Dariel Alvarez groundout to make the score 7-6.

Berry pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking five in the no decision. Vasquez recorded the final out of the sixth inning, but surrendered three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk without recording an out in the seventh inning as he took the loss. Hensley pitched three innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out one and walking one.

Binghamton reliever Ryan Fraser picked up the win, throwing one and one-third scoreless innings and striking out one batter.

RHP Zach Davies (2-4, 5.13) takes the mound for the Baysox Sunday as the team plays the final game in a three game home series with the Binghamton Mets. He will be opposed by RHP Matt Bowman (5-4, 3.84)

The Baysox are home through Wednesday, June 25 for a six game homestand with games against the Binghamton Mets and Trenton Thunder. Promotional highlights include Orioles Pride Day Sunday, June 22 at 2:05 p.m. and Mutt Monday, June 23 at 6:35 p.m.
