Early Hole Too Deep for Admirals in 4-1 Setback
March 15, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Two goals in the first 6:25 sent the Admirals to an eighth straight loss Sunday afternoon in a 4-1 defeat to the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin ' Donuts Center.
Norfolk fell into an early hole on goals from Zach Phillips and Seth Griffith. Phillips snapped a shot past Ryan Faragher a minute and 32 seconds in and Griffith followed with another marker five minutes later.
An odd-man rush into the Norfolk zone led by Justin Florek ended on a wrister from the right circle off Griffith's stick to the short side of Faragher, doubling the gap to 2-0 at 6:25 of the opening frame.
As the period closed, Andrew O'Brien sat two minutes for high-sticking. The Bruins already converted on one of their two previous attempts in the period, but Max Friberg scored a timely goal for Norfolk to shrink the lead before intermission.
Friberg scooped a deflection out of the zone and raced in on Providence netminder Jeremy Smith for the shorthanded goal with 51 seconds remaining in the first. It was the Admirals' eighth shorthanded marker of the year, one off the league lead.
There was no scoring for over 35 minutes until Chris Breen potted an insurance goal with 5:33 left in regulation. Breen corralled a puck off the wall at the right point and lined a slap shot from distance past Faragher at 14:27 of the third for a 3-1 lead.
Florek picked up his second point of the game with an empty-netter at 19:13 to cap a 4-1 victory for Providence. Smith made 34 saves on 35 attempts and Faragher allowed three goals on 29 shots. Norfolk went scoreless on three power-play opportunities while the Bruins were 1-for-4.
The fifth stop on this seven-game road trip is Albany this Wednesday at 7 p.m. on 1650 AM WHKT and AHLLive.com.
Three Stars:
1. Seth Griffith (GWG)
2. Chris Wagner
3. Jeremy Smith (34 saves)
