Miller's Hat Trick Gives OKC 6-1 Win
March 15, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release
Andrew Miller recorded the first hat trick of his career and Matt Ford had three assists, leading the Oklahoma City Barons to a 6-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers Sunday at the Cox Convention Center.
With a goal in the second period and two more in the third, a Miller was the first Baron to register three goals in a game since Roman Horak netted three in a Feb. 7, 2014 Barons win against, coincidentally, the Checkers. Miller's hat trick was also the first registered by a Barons player at home since current Edmonton Oiler Jordan Eberle managed the feat in a 5-2 OKC win over Texas on Dec. 31, 2012.
Oklahoma City improved to 37-18-3-3 with the win and climbed to within two standings points of AHL Western Conference leaders, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The Barons recorded their earliest goal of the season to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead 1:13 into play, when Jason Williams found Curtis Hamilton near the left circle of the Charlotte zone, where Hamilton wristed a shot past Checkers goalie Drew McIntyre.
At 7:39 of the first, brothers Connor and Kellen Jones teamed up for the fifth time this season to give the Barons a 2-0 advantage. After a shot by Kellen Jones rebounded off the pads of McIntyre, Connor Jones grabbed the puck in the Charlotte slot and flipped it over the glove of the Checkers goalie for what would be the game's deciding goal.
Miller netted his first goal of the game with the Barons on the power play at 15:19 of the first, scoring off a Bogdan Yakimov pass through the Checkers slot to extend the Barons' lead to 3-0.
Brandon Davidson increased Oklahoma City's lead to 4-0 with the lone second period goal of the game, intercepting a pass by Charlotte's Beau Schmitz in the right circle of the Checkers zone and blasting a shot past McIntyre at 6:32 of the frame.
Miller notched his second goal of the game 15:46 of the third period with a takeaway from the Checkers' Alex Aleardi and a quick wrist shot over the glove of McIntyre to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Barons.
With the Barons on the power play again at 16:42 of the third, Miller sent a shot from the point that sailed into the top-right corner of the Checkers net to give the Barons a 6-0 lead and Miller his first career AHL hat trick.
Brendan Woods scored Charlotte's only goal of the game at the 18:59 mark of the third period to cut Oklahoma City's lead to 6-1.
Surrendering just Woods's goal in what was his 15th consecutive start in net, Barons goalie Laurent Brossoit made 25 saves and improved to 21-14-2.
The Barons' next game is Tuesday, March 17, when they face the Milwaukee Admirals in a 7 p.m. start at the Cox Convention Center.
