Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY -- Scott Wedgewood registered his first shutout of the season, but it came in an Albany Devils shootout loss against the Springfield Falcons Sunday at Times Union Center. The Devils netminder made 33 saves in the 1-0 loss.

Albany, which is trying to climb back into playoff position, registered three-of-six points during their three-in-three home weekend. The team moves to 27-24-5-6 overall. Springfield -- one of the teams Albany is chasing, improves to 33-23-7-0.

"We brought some fresh legs in, so we were hoping to get some good jump from those guys, which we did," said defenseman Dan Kelly. "It's a chess game. It's who's going to make that first mistake. Both teams didn't give up much defensively so it gets settled in the shootout."

Coming off a 21-save performance Saturday, Wedgewood was called on to make four saves in the first, 15 in the second, eight in the third and six in overtime.

"Wedgie stood on his head tonight," Kelly said. "He made the saves he needed to make and we helped him out when we needed to help him out as a five man unit. He's finding his game. He's been great the last two games and we haven't been able to get the win."

Wedgewood admits he did have help from his teammates. Albany went 4-of-4 on the penalty kill.

"We have always taken pride in our D-zone," he said. "We have some big guys back there, sometimes it's hard to see through them, but they throw people around too. They block, knock guys down on chances, and they have good sticks to knock things away. I trust them and I think they trust my ability to make recovered saves if they make mistakes."

At the other end, Scott Munroe made 35 saves, also for a shutout performance. He was busy in the third period, turning aside 14 shots. As his teammates T.J. Tynan and Sean Collins converted in the shootout, Munroe stopped both attempts he faced.

"I thought both goalies again were outstanding and it's a tough one," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "Certainly there were chances -- two desperate teams, two tired teams. You had your usual Sunday afternoon mistakes, but I thought both teams played hard. They were just better in the shootout."

The Devils did have opportunities with the man advantage. They went 0-6 for the game, including two chances during the final eight minutes.
