Early Deficit Too Much To Overcome
August 25, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Zack Parker's teammates have made winning a challenge for the left-hander most of the season. On Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium, it was the other way around.
Parker (3-5) had a rare bad outing as Bridgeport jumped on his for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings, and the Bluefish held on for a 7-6 win in the middle game of a three-game series in front of 4,158 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the win, the Bluefish climbed to within 2 ½ games of the second wild card spot in the Atlantic League playoff chase.
Adam Greenberg started the night with a bloop double down the right field line and immediately stole third. One out later, he scored on Luis Lopez' roller up the middle. Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a bouncer back to Parker, but the Lancaster starter fired wildly into right center as Lopez reached second safely. The ball continued past Michael Woods for another error as Lopez scooted to third. Brandon Sing walked to load the bases. Luis Rodriguez and Enohel Polanco followed with RBI singles for a 3-0 lead before Parker could escape.
Aaron Herr's two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the inning cut the deficit to one, but Bridgeport blew the game open in the top of the third.
Jesse Hoorelbeke opened the inning with a smash off the glove of Herr at third, and Sing followed with a line drive to right center that sent Hoorelbeke to third. Luis Rodriguez singled to right for a 4-2 lead, and a walk to Polanco loaded the bases with nobody out. Parker got a grounder to second out of Colin Roberson, but the Barnstormers lost any chance for a double play when Anderson Machado dropped the ball attempting a relay to first. Shea Harris bounced back to the mound for the second out, but Greenberg produced two extra runs with a single flared into right center as the Bluefish lead grew to 7-2.
Ricardo Gomez, Eddie Camacho and Nick Abel combined to fire 6 1/3 shutout innings of relief, giving the Barnstormers a chance.
L.J. Biernbaum lined a homer to right off Matt Pike (6-7) to open the sixth. Aaron Herr was hit in the head by Pike's next pitch and left for pinch runner Vic Gutierrez, who would steal second and go to third on a bad throw by Harris. Machado brought him home with a two-out ground single to right as Lancaster came back to within three.
With closer Patrick Ryan out with an ankle injury, the Bluefish turned to Andy Weimer for the ninth. Suarez greeted him with a triple to left center and scored on a double to right by Lloyd Turner, bringing the tying run to the plate. Weimer retired Woods and Biernbaum on ground balls as Turner scored. Gutierrez walked, but Matt Watson grounded to second for the final out as Weimer chalked up his third save of the season.
The series concludes at 7:05 on Wednesday as the Barnstormers welcome WWE Hall of Famer George "The Animal" Steele to Clipper Magazine Stadium. Jason Scobie (6-8) will take the hill for Lancaster against RHP Esteban Yan (11-5). Tickets for the game are available at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com or by calling 717-509-HITS between 10 am and 3 pm.
NOTES: Biernbaum's homer was his first since July 24...Lancaster is 6-15 at home in the second half and 27-27 overall on the year...Parker's ERA jumped from 3.59 to 3.98.
