Early Deficit Holds Up

Giving up three runs in the fourth inning the Calgary Vipers were defeated 7-3 by the Edmonton Capitals before 1455 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. After falling behind 4-0 in the fourth the two teams traded off runs in the next three innings but the Vipers were unable to get any closer than a three run deficit. With the loss Calgary dropped five of six games in Edmonton and falls to 22-12 on the second half for a two and a half games lead on the Victoria Seals for first place in the North Division with 11 games remaining. Overall the Snakes are now 45-32 on the Golden Baseball League season.

Mark Michael (2-4) recorded the loss after giving up four earned runs in five innings while pitching on only three-days rest.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the second inning when Matt Rogelstad doubled, Alex Prieto walked, Kevin House was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ryan Stevenson walked for a run batted in and a 1-0 lead.

The Capitals added to the lead in the fourth frame as Stevenson and Enrique Cruz singled, Tom Collaro walked to load the bases, Stevenson scored on a passed ball, Cruz scored on a wild pitch, and Larry Bigbie drove in a run with a base hit for a 4-0 advantage.

Calgary got a run back in the fifth when Jorge Mejia walked, Guillermo Reyes singled, and Brent Metheny collected a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 score.

Edmonton got that run right back in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 game as Stevenson walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a Cruz sacrifice fly.

The Vipers got another run in the sixth frame when Drew Miller tripled and scored on a Dillon O'Krane sacrifice fly for a 5-2 score.

Right away the Capitals again retook a four-run lead at 6-2 with a Bigbie leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth.

For a third straight inning Calgary scored a lone run as in the seventh Mejia and Reyes walked, Julio Ramirez singled to load the bases, and Miller drove in a run with a groundout for a 6-3 game.

Once again Edmonton answered in the bottom of the inning with a matching run when Kevin House singled and scored on a Collaro RBI double for a 7-3 lead.

The Vipers return home to Calgary for their final regular season home-stand at Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 26th at 7:05 PM MDT for Chick Wagon Night with a first-place showdown against the Victoria Seals. The two teams will also play Friday August 27th at 7:05 PM MDT for Small Town Spirit Night, Saturday August 28th at 5:05 PM MDT for Winnipeg Night, and Sunday August 29th at 1:35 PM MDT for Fan Appreciation Day.
