Orange County Flyers News Release

FULLERTON, Calif (Aug 24, 2010), -- The Orange County Flyers dropped a second consecutive game for the first time in three weeks as Maui's Donald Brandt tossed his first complete game to defeat the Flyers, 2-1, in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Goodwin Field. With the loss, the Flyers (22-7 2nd half, 44-30) drop one and half games behind Maui (21-5) 2nd half, 47-23) in the GBL South division.

Donald Brandt (12-0) matched the GBL record for wins in a season, going seven innings giving up one run on three hits while striking out six Flyers. Brandt now leads the GBL in wins with 12, leading Orange County's Manny Ayala by one win. Ayala, who is scheduled to start Game 2 of today's doubleheader for the Flyers, holds a share of the league record with 12 wins during his rookie year in 2005.

Maui was held scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Gered Mochizuki hit his first homer of the year to break up Jake Renshaw's no-hitter. Maui added an insurance run in the fifth inning after Brandt hit a double down the right field line and Fehlandt Lentini drove him home on a double as they led Orange County 2-0.

Brandt no-hit Orange County into the fifth inning, when Derek Perren singled up the middle, but Brandt picked him off first base. After being shutdown for most of the game, the Flyers offense got a spark in the bottom of the seventh with Jimmy Rohan leading off the inning with a single. Down to their final out, Julian Benavidez doubled to deep center to cash Rohan from first as the Flyers cut the lead in half 2-1, but Perren grounded out one batter later to end the game.

The Flyers got a strong pitching performance from Jake Renshaw (3-3) who pitched six innings giving up two runs on four hits while striking out two. Mark Prior pitched a scoreless seventh inning giving up one hit and striking out one.

Orange County and Maui will play the second game of today's doubleheader this evening at Goodwin Field starting at 7:45pm. The game can be heard live on the Flyers broadcast network here: http://bit.ly/btkh33
