Caps Close Calgary Series With Dominant 7-3 Win

Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - When the Edmonton Capitals entered their six-game series with the Calgary Vipers on Thursday, they were eight games back of their provincial rivals for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division, and their chances of making the playoffs were getting slimmer by the day.
Just five days later, the Caps are now knocking on the Vipers' door for the top spot, sitting just four games back after taking five of the six games at TELUS Field, with their playoff hopes alive and well once again. Edmonton finished off the dominant series with a 7-3 win on Monday night.
"It definitely feels good to be where we are now and take five out of six from them," said Caps centre fielder Ryan Stevenson, who went 1-for-4 in the victory with two runs and one RBI. "It's coming down to the end of the season and we're right in the hunt. We're really coming together at the right time, so there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to keep this going."
Caps left fielder Larry Bigbie socked another home run and finished with a pair of RBI, while short stop Enrique Cruz extended his hitting streak to 26 games, in addition to scoring and driving in a run. Second baseman Matt Rogelstad led the Caps in hits, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Edmonton led from start to finish, due in large part to a stellar combined effort from their pitching staff. Starter Lou Pote scattered three runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings. He got the win to improve to 8-3 and also struck out eight Vipers, giving him 112 on the season to lead the league. Ryan Paul, Scott Kelly, Mike Johnson and Chad Blackwell took over from there, shutting the Vipers out to seal the win.
The Caps improved to 18-16 in the second half and now get Tuesday and Wednesday to rest up before heading to Tucson for a four-game series with the Toros Thursday through Sunday. They return home for their final three games of the regular season at TELUS Field, as they host the Victoria Seals the following Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for 2011 are now available, and fans who purchase them before Sept. 2 will received a bat autographed by the entire team. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
