Eagles Trail Islanders as Game Suspended in Third Period

CHARLOTTETOWN- The Cape Breton Eagles and Charlottetown Islanders couldn't finish what they started on Tuesday night in Charlottetown. The game has been suspended with 18:53 remaining in the third period, and fans are instructed to stay tuned to capebretoneagles.com and Cape Breton Eagles social media for further updates. A resumption date for the game has not yet been determined. Charlottetown had a 4-0 lead at the time of the game being suspended.

An early power play got the game's scoring started, but it was a short handed marker- Zachary Beauregard converting on the breakaway with a backhand through the legs of William Grimard. It looked as though the Islanders had doubled the lead just after the six minute mark when Brett Budgell put one in from the side of the net, but the goal was called back when it was ruled Budgell had kicked the puck in.

There was activity on the scoresheet not long after when Cape Breton's Cole Fraser and Charlottetown's Ben Boyd dropped the gloves for a spirited scrap in which Fraser landed most of the shots. But it was Charlottetown striking again on the scoresheet as Cédric Desruisseaux rushed up the left wing to put it through Grimard with 76 seconds remaining in the period. The goal came on a delayed Eagles penalty, although Colten Ellis had not yet reached the bench before the red light went on.

Noah Laaouan wired a puck off the bar in the opening 30 seconds of the middle period, the iron saving the Eagles from facing a three goal deficit. However Charlottetown would earn a third and fourth goal due to some fortunate bounces later in the frame

Before the halfway mark of the period, FJ Buteau went down blocking a shot, and the Islanders drew a penalty on the ensuing sequence. Desruisseaux blasted a heavy one timer on the blocker side from the right circle on the power play. (Buteau would go to the dressing room, as would Eagles forward Liam Kidney later in the frame, but both returned to action before period's end.)

Later in the period, Nathan Larose attempted to clear the puck from behind the net but his stick exploded, gifting the puck to Sam Oliver who wasted no time putting it by Grimard. Grimard certainly made his share of saves throughout the night though, including a big glove snag on Thomas Casey near period's end. (Prior to the Grimard stop, Colten Ellis had an impressive stop of his own, denying Lucas Canning on a breakaway.)

With just 1:07 played in the third period, a small part of the ice in the Charlottetown zone was worn down to the concrete. Maintenance crew in the building attempted to fix the issue but were unable to and the game was suspended. At the time of suspension, the Eagles were about to head to the power play as Oskar Plandowski had been issued a minor penalty for holding.

Eagles captain Jarrett Baker returned to the lineup, playing for the first time since February 14th. Baker registered one hit and one shot during the portion of the game that was played. The Eagles also recalled forward Kian Bell from the Steele Subaru of the Nova Scotia Major Under 18 League for the game. It's his sixth game as an affiliate player this season.

Fans are instructed to check Eagles social media and capebretoneagles.com about the resumption of the suspended game. As of now, the schedule for Wednesday night's game has not been changed.

The same two clubs are scheduled to play the rematch will tomorrow in Charlottetown with puck drop at 7 PM.
