Eagles Top Titan for Perfect Home Stand at the Nest

March 2, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME

- Angelo Fullerton opened the scoring for the Eagles at the 16:43 mark of the first period and the Eagles wouldn't relinquish the lead as they topped the Acadie-Bathurst Titan by a score of 4-1

- Following two victories over Saint John on the weekend, the Eagles went 3-0 on this home stand.

- Ivan Ivan's empty net goal was his second point of the night, Luke Patterson added two assists, while William Shields & Cam Squires also scored in the Eagle victory. Bobby Orr notched the Titan goal.

- Both goaltenders shone for their respective teams, as Nicolas Ruccia stopped 24 of 25 shots in the win while Joshua Flemming stopped 36 of 39 in addition to the empty netter.

The Eagles carried the play early, at one point outshooting the Titan 8-1, but were unable to crack Josh Flemming in the early going. Both teams couldn't score on their opening power play, as the Eagles killed off a penalty to Angelo Fullerton and the Titan killed off an instigator penalty to Noah Ryan after his fight with Cape Breton's Charles Boutin.

The Eagles were able to strike at even strength- a Samuel Johnson pass bounced off the stick of Cole Larkin, but still hit the intended target of Angelo Fullerton who buried the opening goal past Joshua Flemming. Late in the period the Eagles had a five on three opportunity for 33 seconds, but were unable to score on either power play, the second of which carried into the middle stanza.

Once again, it would be at even strength where the Eagles would convert, before the period was three minutes old. An intended pass by Luke Patterson bounced off a Titan player but came to William Shields at the other side of the net and the Eagles had a 2-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, Bathurst equalised when Bobby Orr was left alone at the right side of the goal and pushed a rebound from a Ben Allison shot over the goal line. Neither team could score in the final 14 minutes of the period and the Eagles led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Bathurst's power play had some critical opportunities in the third period, the first coming when the Eagles were caught with too many men on the ice. Thanks to big shot blocks from Antoine Roy, the Eagles were able to kill the penalty. After the Eagles cleared the zone, Cam Squires dangled his way to the front of the net, drawing a power play that the Eagles wouldn't net as Squires saved a final move to go around Josh Flemming. The Eagles held 3-1.

After failing to score on a Jacob Newcombe minor penalty, the Titan pulled the goaltender as Flemming headed to the bench with just over two minutes to play. The visitors could not get any closer on the scoresheet though, and Ivan Ivan hit the open net to make it a 4-1 final score.

The Eagles will now hit the road for a three game road trip, beginning Saturday night in Halifax. Puck drop is 7 PM Atlantic time. The game is available for purchase online at https://bit.ly/3medDPP.
