Eagles Top Sea Dogs 9-8 in Goal Filled Affair at the Nest

February 26, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME

- It was a record breaking day for the Cape Breton Eagles as they held on for a 9-8 for a victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs. It's the most combined goals ever scored in an Eagles game, and new Eagles captain (named on Saturday afternoon) tied team records for points (7) and assists (5).

- After scoring the first two goals of the game and then rallying from down 3-2, the Eagles held on after building leads of 7-3, 8-5, and 9-6.

- Rookies William Shields & Angelo Fullerton (Cape Breton) and Eriks Mateiko (Saint John) all collected the first two goal games of their career.

- In total 16 players between the two teams registered multi-point games, including Cape Breton's Samuel Johnson (one goal & three assists), Olivier Houde (three assists) Cam Squires (one goal & one assist), Tomas Lavoie (two assists)

- Oliver Satny went the distance in picking up the win, stopping 29 of 37 shots. Ventsislav Shingarov took the loss in relief, allowing four goals on 23 shots while Olivier Brideau allowed five goals on 23 shots before getting the hook.

The Eagles started quickly, as Fullerton took advantage of a bounce off the boards in the opening minute to put the home side up 1-0- a lead that doubled when Shields converted on a rebound. However, special teams would help get Saint John back into the game. After the Eagles killed a brief five on three, Mateiko found his first goal at the side of the net to put the visitors on the board. It was a tie game when Vincent Despont passed the puck off the side boards to Vince Élie, who spun around and put the puck by Satny.

Saint John broke the tie early in the second period to take their first (and only) lead of the game when Luka Benoit cashed in at the side of the net. Shields second of the game tied the score though, and Ivan restored the Eagle lead by lifting it over Brideau. After Squires deked around Brideau, he was lifted in favour of Shingarov.

Shingarov was rudely welcomed into the game, stopping a shot on a two on one from Johnson after a pass from Houde, but Johnson cashed in on the rebound. Less than 50 seconds later the new Sea Dogs keeper was beat again on Ivan's second of the night and the Eagles built their biggest lead of the night at 7-3.

Once again Saint John got a shot in the arm from their power play, as Brady Burns fired a shot from the top of the left circle. Before period's end Mateiko found the back of the net to close the gap to 7-5, but the Eagles countered with a Trevor Thurston shot that bounced up and over Shingarov.

The Eagles were unable to cash in on a four minute power play that carried over into the third period, and following Saint John's penalty the teams traded goals with Giuseppe Ianniello scoring for the visitors before Fullerton's second of the night made the score 9-6.

Saint John made a final push back- two goals 68 seconds apart, as Alexis Cournoyer converted a pass on the right wing, and Noah Reinhart cashed in after a bounce off the end boards with 10:31 remaining.

Despite the chaotic first 50 minutes, the final ten saw no further scoresheet activity. In the final two minutes Saint John coach Travis Crickard elected to pull Shingarov for an extra attacker, but remarkably after 17 goals had been scored, there were none more to be found as the Eagles secured a 9-8 victory.

The Eagles will conclude their three game home stand on Thursday night as they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Tickets can be purchased at https://bit.ly/3Z1R5AA They are also available for purchase in person at the Centre 200 box office and by the phone during box office hours at 902-564-2200
