Eagles Take First Game of Back-To-Back in OT
October 30, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Cape Breton Eagles (4-5-0-0) scored 1:18 into overtime to steal game one of this weekend's back-to-back series at TD Station from the Saint John Sea Dogs (1-3-2-1).
Noah Patenaude started for Saint John while Cape Breton started rookie Nicolas Ruccia.
Saint John were without defencemen Hunter Gartley and Benjamin Roode, and forward Julian Vander Voet (healthy scratches).
Cam MacDonald scored his first QMJHL goal just 26 seconds into the game on a tight angle shot that beat Ruccia upstairs. Saint John built off the momentum and were buzzing for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Eagles rallied back with speed through the middle but Saint John took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.
Four minutes into the second period Charles Savoie had his first of the season on a slick move in the slot. Cape Breton fired back and tied the game on back-to-back goals from Liam Kidney and Ryan Francis. The tie was short lived as Joshua Roy scored his team leading fifth goal at 16:07. A scramble for the puck in front of the net saw Roy find it and wire it low glove side. Dawson Stairs went off for roughing late and the Eagles connected on the power play with a seeing eye shot from the blueline that fooled Patenaude.
The two teams were tied for less than three minutes to start the third period as Cape Breton struck early to take a 4-3 lead. Saint John powered through and were rewarded when William Villeneuve let a blast go from the point that deflected in off a defender for his first of the season at 13:46., tying the game 4-4.
Shawn Element scored the overtime winner for the Eagles at 1:18 of the extra frame. Patenaude finished with 32 saves for Saint John while Ruccia had 24 stops.
