Winning Ways Alive in Charlottetown as Islanders Welcome Moose to Town

October 30, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

Few teams in the QMJHL are hotter than the Charlottetown Islanders right now.

Part of that may be due to the fact that 12 of the teams haven't played a game in two weeks, but the other part of that is that the Isles have already earned two three-game winning streaks in the early parts of the 2020-2021 season. They'll look to extend their current win streak to four this evening as the Halifax Mooseheads come to town.

The Islanders (6-1-0-0) continue to be propelled offensively by veteran scoring prowess at the top of their lineup. Cedric Desruisseaux has goals in six straight games following his third period tally in Charlottetown's 4-1 victory over the Moncton Wildcats last Saturday night, while Thomas Casey picked up a goal and a helper of his own, helping him leapfrog Desruisseaux for the team scoring lead with 14 points.

On defense, Noah Laaouan and Lukas Cormier each recorded a pair of points in Saturday's victory. The duo have seen great success on the point together over the course of their time as a pairing, and that's continued in to this season. Cormier leads all QMJHL defensemen with 11 points in just seven games, while Laaouan is starting to heat up with all three of his points this season coming within the team's last three games.

Laaouan's lone goal of the season was actually the game-winning goal against the Mooseheads in the first matchup of these two teams earlier this season. A one-time shot from the point on the powerplay, Laaouan's first period goal stood as the winner in a 5-0 drubbing of the Moose by the Isles back on October 16th.

The Mooseheads (3-4-2-0), meanwhile, are coming off a hard-fought 4-3 overtime loss just last night to the Moncton Wildcats. It was a back-and-forth affair that saw the teams exchange goals throughout the game, but Gabriel Fortier sealed the deal in overtime with his third goal of the game just 22 seconds in to the extra frame. Despite the loss, the Mooseheads are gaining traction in the standings, having picked up points in three of their last four games, including two victories. Their last victory was a 10-2 pounding of the Cape Breton Eagles last Saturday.

Elliot Desnoyers was a catalyst for the Mooseheads last weekend. Ever since being selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, Desnoyers has been on fire, recording points in all but one game during that stretch. The former Wildcat notched four goals in the lopsided victory last weekend and added another assist last night against his former team. Desnoyers now sits fifth in QMJHL scoring with 13 points in 9 games to start the season.

All of the action tonight can be heard live online on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio on YouTube! Wanna watch the action? Head over to the Factory Downtown or Boston Pizza; both places are showing the games live
