Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY- A dominating final six minutes secured the two points for the Eagles in a 3-1 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Saturday night in Sydney. The Eagles swept the weekend set after a 5-2 win on Friday.
The first period was played at a brisk pace- after the puck was dropped to begin the game, it was another 4:44 before the next whistle. And towards the end of the period, the teams played almost twice as long- 8:53 in total- without a stoppage. Two of the ten stoppages in the period were for penalties- each team drawing a power play but neither able to score.
The game found its first goal prior to the halfway mark of regulation. Nicolas Ruccia was able to turn aside a Cole Huckins shot and a Riley Kidney rebound, but Adam McCormick jumped into the play and put the visitors ahead. The 1-0 score held at period's end.
Much like the first period, the early portion of the third period was played quickly- there wasn't a whistle until the 6:43 mark. Later in the period another four minutes of play went by without a stoppage, but not without chances. As Ryan Francis was reunited on a trio with Félix Lafrance and Shawn Element, the line generated multiple big chances.
It paid off at the 14 minute mark with a three way passing play- starting with Lafrance, to Francis and finishing with Element tapping the tying goal by Chad Arsenault. 96 seconds later, after a big save by Ruccia on Logan Chisholm, the Eagles found a go ahead goal.
Ãâ°mile Hegarty-Aubin won a battle in front of the net and moved the puck to Connor Trenholm at the side of the goal. He flipped a backhand diagonal pass to Liam Kidney who ripped a shot over Arsenault to give the Eagles the lead.
Just seven seconds after the goal, the Titan were in more trouble as Alexis Dubé was sent off for high sticking. Not long into the power play, Francis circled the net, finding Jarrett Baker who sent the puck to the side of the goal for a Lafrance tip in and the Eagles had shifted the game in their favour. The Titan couldn't muster much in the way of scoring attempts through the remainder of the third period and the Eagles picked up a 3-1 win.
Ruccia was the winning goalie, stopping 22 of 23 shots. Arsenault took the loss while turning aside 38 of 41 shots.
Just as was the case the prior night, local goaltenders served as the backups- Michael MacMullen (Cape Breton) & Andrew Marsh (Bathurst.)
The Eagles will now make their first visit to Charlottetown for a pair of games against the Islanders, beginning on Friday night. Puck drop on Friday is at 7 PM. The game will be streamed online, available for purchase at qmjhl.neulion.com/qmjhl.
