Eagles sting Scorpions, 7-4

WINDSOR, CO - The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League (CHL) spanked the New Mexico Scorpions at the Budweiser Events Center this afternoon, 7-4. The Eagles sold out their twenty fourth straight home game, 5,211 fans were in attendance. The Eagles are now 31-11-3 and have 65 points. The Scorpions are 24-18-3 on the season with 51 points. Eagles Greg Pankewicz, Daniel Bohac, Riley Nelson, Igor Bondarevs, Brent Thompson, and Karlis Zirnis all had multiple points in the game. Eagles goaltender Ryan Bach was solid at the net saving 20 of 24 shots on goal. Scorpions netminder Miguel Beaudry saved 43 of 50 shots. Eagles defenseman Bondarevs extended his point streak to five games by adding one goal and two assists.

The Scorpions struck first when right winger Shaun Legault slipped the puck passed goaltender Bach (7:22). Three minutes later the Eagles took advantage of a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity, when right winger Greg Pankewicz ripped a slap shot past goaltender Beaudry (10:49) for his 27th goal of the season. The Eagles out shot the Scorpions 14 to 6.

Colorado dominated the second period of play, scoring three unanswered goals within six minutes of the start of the period, breaking the team record for fastest three goals (1:18). Ryan Tobler scored the first goal of the period (4:42), he was assisted by Daniel Bohac and Scott Swanson. Bohac netted the third Eagles goal with 14:26 remaining, he was assisted by Karlis Zirnis and Lee Ruff. The Eagles' fourth goal was scored by Igor Bondarevs from Mike McGhan and Zirnis. Bach saved 8 of 8 shots in the period; Beaudry saved 15 of 18 shots.

The third period experienced six goals. Brian Barker started the scoring at 5:24 from Clint Wensley. Just over a minute later, Scorpions leading scorer Mike Oliveira netted his 27th goal of the season (7:03) to make the score 4-3; he was assisted by Peter Ambroziak and Mike Possin. Colorado struck back when Pankewicz lit the lamp for the second time (11:18) on a short-handed goal from Riley Nelson and Brent Thompson. The Eagles next goal earned all of the fans a free Subway sandwich when Fraser Filipic scored from Brad Patterson and Bondarevs. New Mexico didn't give up; Peter Ambroziak scored his 21st goal (15:45) of the season to cut the lead to 6-4. Possin and Oliveira each tallied an assist on the play. The Scorpions pulled goaltender Beaudry only to have Zirnis score with 26 seconds remaining in the game; Brent Thompson had an assist on the play, his second of the night. The game ended with a 7-4 Eagles victory. The Eagles killed all five of New Mexico's powerplay chances, while scoring one powerplay goal on two chances. The Eagles out shot the Scorpions 50-24.

NEXT FOR THE EAGLES

The Eagles are off on a four game road trip. They will travel to Oklahoma City to face the Blazers, Friday, February 6 at 6:35 pm (MST). Then it is off to Memphis to for a Saturday, February 7 game at 6:05 pm (MST). The Eagles then travel to Bossier-Shreveport to take on the Mudbugs on Sunday, February 8 at 4:05 pm (MST). The last game of the road trip is on Tuesday, February 10 against the Tulsa Oilers at 6:05 pm (MST).
