Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced Friday that they have signed Ray Sawada for the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound forward has spent his entire career at the AHL and NHL level, including 11 games with the Dallas Stars. Sawada was drafted by Dallas in the 2nd round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, taken with the 52nd overall selection. He would go on to notch a goal for the Stars in the 2008-09 season.
The Richmond, British Columbia native has 126 points in 286 AHL games with the Iowa Stars, Texas Stars and St. John's Ice Caps. Last season, Sawada posted 13 goals, 29 points and 88 penalty minutes in 65 games with the Ice Caps.
Prior to his professional career, Sawada spent four seasons at Cornell University where he served as the Captain for the Big Red during his senior season. He also helped Cornell capture the 2005 ECAC Championship during his freshman season. In 137 games at the collegiate level, Sawada registered 76 points, including 31 goals.
Per ECHL rules, each team can have up to four veteran players on the active roster, however, additional veterans can be a part of the team, as long as they are on the reserve list or the 21-day IR.
In addition to Sawada, the Eagles have also signed goaltender Trevor Cann who was with the Eagles on a tryout agreement. Both Sawada and Cann will be present at the game in Bakersfield on Friday, October 18, 2013.
