Cape Breton Eagles News Release

ROUYN-NORANDA - Both a two game winning streak and a season long road trip came to an end for the Screaming Eagles as they fell 5-2 Saturday in Rouyn-Noranda.

There was no scoring and limited chances in a first period that saw the teams combine for less than 20 shots. Things would open up the second period, in big part due to special teams play.

After each team went 0 for 1 on the man advantage, the Eagles would find themselves in trouble with three straight minors in the second period. With Ty Fournier and Gabriel Proulx already in the box, Leon Gawanke was whistled for hooking. With two other penalties on the board the time on Gawanke's wouldn't begin to tick down until the Fournier penalty expired.

Rouyn-Noranda would go on to score twice on the 5 on 3. First it was Tommy Beaudoin scoring from the lip of the crease with 1:05 remaining on the Proulx penalty. With still ample time to work with, a point shot would be tipped by Félix Bibeau to extend the lead to 2-0. The Eagles would kill the remaining 5 on 4 to somewhat minimize the damage.

Before the end of the period, the Huskies' lead would both be erased and restored. Captain Phélix Martineau would begin the rally for the visitors, banking a shot from a sharp angle past Zachary Emond to halve the lead. Then with under four minutes remaining in the period the Eagles would have their own special teams success, as Ross MacDougall unleashed a bullet of a shot on the power play to knot the game at two.

However Bibeau would put the Huskies ahead before the period was over. Behind the goal line, Bibeau was able to bank the puck from behind goaltender Kevin Mandolese and into the net to give the Huskies a 3-2 edge heading into the final stanza. It was once again the power play going to work for Rouyn-Noranda as Peter Abbandonato added to the lead just after the three minute mark. Not long after the Eagles would have back to back power plays of their own but couldn't find the back of the Rouyn-Noranda net.

With just over two minutes to play Screaming Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont would lift Mandolese for an extra attacker. The Eagles would get no closer though and Huskies captain Mathieu Boucher would ht the open cage to secure the win for the home side.

Emond would pick up the victory, stopping 33 of 35 shots. Mandolese was given the loss, allowing four goals on 29 shots in addition to the empty netter. Now that the season long road trip has concluded the Eagles are set to return to Centre 200 for a game Wednesday night against the Moncton Wildcats. Puck drop is 7 PM.
